This book is an amazing hybrid of romance novel and history book. I first read 'Zadruga' at the age of 13, after having read other Margaret Pemberton classics. The story follows the two main characters, the Karageorgevich sisters from Belgrade, from their late adolescence to late middle-age, intertwining events in their lives with the unfolding stories of two world wars.

The writing is deceptively easy to read, the plotting is tight and considered, and the characters and situations are richly textured. What really sets this book apart is the way it brings history to life. I learnt more from this book about the build up to the first world war than through all my school history lessons to the age of 16. World War 1 trivial pursuit questions suddenly got a whole lot easier!

If you like your novels to be enjoyable but not frothy, romantic but not slushy, satisfyingly ended but not predictable, informative but not preachy - then this book is for you.
