Book Description

8 Sep 2012 Bruno Gmunder Verlag
The name of Zack rings loud throughout the gay world as one of the foremost creators of erotic imagery. Under his given name Oliver Frey he has had an impressive career as an illustrator - but his pseudonym Zack stands for a marvelous cosmos of its own: sexy boys and hunky men, love, lust and total abandon. It's not often that you find an artist who has such an incredible sense for both stirring storytelling and accurate anatomy. "Zack - The Art" gives you a comprehensive overview of the hitherto existing lifework of an icon of gay art.

5.0 out of 5 stars the astounding art of Zack 26 Aug 2012
By schumann_bg TOP 500 REVIEWER
Zack - aka Oliver Frey, or Rogue as he used to be called in the days of Him magazine - is one of the most fantastic gay artists there's ever been, and it is great to see him getting a book devoted to his art in the broader sense than the comic narratives that are so hot. This book gives that same erotic charge on every page, some of which show images from his comics, but many I hadn't seen before, even though I have most of his recent stuff. This volume will take your breath away if you like his style, it really is no-holds-barred, as always in his fantasies, with that edge of danger. The way it is put together is a real labour of love as well - divided into sections with headings like Boy Next Door, Heavy Intent and Over the Top, it also has a chapter of magazine covers, adverts and posters from the 70s to the 90s, as well as a biography, and every page is laid out differently, which makes it constantly fresh and exciting! The book is quite compact - about the size of a fiction hardback, perhaps a bit wider, and is quite sturdy, really very nicely produced, with a dust jacket ... altogether it is a must-have for fans of his work. Will life ever be the same again? ... it's that brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic contemporary gay comics 3 May 2013
By Gareth Simon TOP 500 REVIEWER
This volume reprints a selection of Oliver Frey's gay art, usually published under the pseudonym of Zack to differentiate it from his `mainstream' graphic work, for which he is equally well-known - see The Fantasy Art of Oliver Frey. The work presented here is primarily pin-ups, posters, magazine and book illustrations, etc., as opposed to his comic-strip work, which has already been collected by this publisher (see list below); although in the short biographical text piece, it is mentioned that a part-finished comic-strip remains from when `Meatman' magazine ceased publication. Hopefully that might be reprinted one day in a successor volume to this, as despite the size and quality of this book, there is still a lot of Zack artwork out there.

The contents are _
P010: Boy Next Door
P028: Boys in Love
P044: Getting Wet
P060: Fantasy
P080: Heavy Intent
P122: Full On
P170: Over the Top
P196: An Art Amatorius (A biographical piece by Roger Kean)
P206: Covers, Adverts, Posters
P234: Afterword (by Francois Peneaud)

The above chapters are thematic collections of the artwork, ranging in scope from single figure images to double-page (and hard-core) crowd scenes, and until you have viewed one of Zack's crowd scenes, your imagination is in need of an upgrade to high definition wide-screen capability. The art is primarily in colour, though there are a number of monochrome or colour-wash images included, as Zack covered a wide field of illustration. Oliver Frey, in the Afterword, is compared to Frank Hampson and Frank Bellamy for influences on his design and composition, and he did in fact continue the famous Trigan Empire comic strip after the departure of Don Lawrence, who, along with Hampson and Bellamy forms the premier division of British comic strip artists of the 20th century (though none of them produced any gay - or straight - pornography, as far as I am aware). This is a superb collection of images by a superb artist.
