Product Description

With driver-free capabilities, the MF823 offers consumers fast and easy mobile Internet connectivity. It uses Qualcomm's second generation LTE chip platform and is only 13 mm thick, making it ideal for the frequent business traveller.

The MF823 has a web UI operation, supports IPV6 and is compatible with Win8/XP/Mac and all major operating systems. It also supports LTE-FDD DL/UL 100/50Mbps, UMTS-HSPA+: DL/UL 42/5.76Mbps and GPRS/GSM downward compatibility, allowing consumers to enjoy high speed Internet access wherever they are without the need for a fixed line Internet connection or public Wi-Fi hotspot. The MF823 has been optimised in terms of high bandwidth, low delay and high communication rate (to reduce the dropping rate of data and voice communication), to ensure that users can enjoy a new generation of mobile high bandwidth Internet access.

I live 100 metres from a Three mast, so have used their data service as my sole indoor broadband connection for about five years now. My previous dongle was an Huawei E353 from Three which gave around 4-6 Mbps average, plugging in the new MF823 has seen the data rate shoot up to 24Mbs connected to the same mast. This is on a '3G+' connection, not 4G. (Green led, not blue).

I've plugged the dongle into a TP-Link MR3420 wifi router which now powers my VOIP phones and wifi internet. I'm on a grand-father-rights old Three 15 GB per month contract so this is now very cheap compared to BT phone line, plus broadband.

There was no set-up involved, I plugged it straight into the router, and off it went after clicking 'connect'. To fine tune the set-up I added Google DNS to the 3G setup screen. It's 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4

On a Windows PC the 'modem' installs device drivers, then brings up the ZTE config page in a web browser. The SIM should install the APN settings automatically, though one Mac reviewer had problems. On my Windows 7 PC the stick just fired up with no using settings needed. Instant broadband.

I've had the unit running 24/7 in the router for over a month now with no problems. The unit runs slightly warm, but the previous E353 ran for four years continuously plugged into a router.

If you live in an area with a good signal, and only a few people on the same mast this should give you blazing speeds, even on 3G+. Speeds will (do) suffer in congested areas, but out in the sticks this is three times faster than my (ex) BT broadband line.

A very excellent result.

Product received was an unlocked ZTE MF823 4G dongle. However it was not a generic ZTE model as expected but an O2 branded device with the O2 logo on it - see picture. The internal webui anagement software is also O2, not generic ZTE. The box it came in says Hilink. The item was sold by Eternal Communications Ltd and fulfilled by Amazon.

The product does work - I used it with EE and 3 SIM cards on a PC and also with a TP-Link TL-MR3420 router in a low signal area with an aerial connected to the USB dongle. So 4 stars for the product functionality reduced to 2 stars for the delivery of a O2 branded product instead of the generic manufacturer version.

This is my first long-term experience with a dongle so it is possible that the small niggles are well-known to regular users. It was needed to give 3G or 4G connectivity to a router with a security camera attached so I was unable to use my usual faultless mi-fi. Set-up was simple but the main niggle is the need to re-boot occasionally for no obvious reason. It doesn't appear to be a network issue but almost something that the dongle needs to do. It is also used on a travelling laptop at the moment because I had taken advantage of a huge short-term gigabyte offer and it takes a little more setting up each time it is switched on than my usual mi-fi. Most importantly it does seem to be pretty good at picking up a signal in our weak rural reception area (3G only) and worked brilliantly when staying at a hotel with a strong 3G signal. I haven't visited anywhere that seemed to have a 4G signal so can't verify its capability there. To sum up, it does a good job but I realise that I should have paid somewhat more for a new router that would take a SIM because of my particular requirements.

This product is shown on website as ZTE branded but when it arrived in had O2 branding and it installed customised O2 software. See screenshot. Could not get it to work properly with a Vodafone SIM.

Using this on Windows 10 on the Three network, and in terms of speed it's a big improvement over my Huawei E220. I'm not getting a 4G signal where I am, but regardless I am getting download speeds of more than 12Mb on 3G/WCDMA. The device itself doesn't feel entirely robust though, with a very plasticky case. The sliding cover for the SIM compartment doesn't feel as though it will stand up to much use and would probably become loose very quickly. The software interface is web based, but a dedicated application would be better for monitoring current usage (I like to keep an eye on how much bandwidth is being used at any given time).

at 50Mbs, faster than Virginmedia's 20Mbs, it's portable and cheaper too
