How to describe the Cherry Poppin' Daddies? Jive mixed with Jazz mixed with Swing mixed with Ska mixed with Rock mixed with a Big Band style all topped off with the feeling that you really should be wearing a ridiculously shouldered orange and green pinstripe suit each time you listen to it. This album really does have that effect. It will have you clicking your fingers every step of the way.
It might surprise a few people who have never heard of them that this is a greatest hits album. It certainly surprised me having only looked up the band after hearing one of their songs on the BASEketball soundtrack. Intrigued, I downloaded the first and title track off this album, 'Zoot Suit Riot' and I was hooked. From that bouncy opening the songs fly between fast-paced dittys with twisted morals ('Mister White Keys', 'Ding-Dong Daddy') to slower, Blues Brother-esque numbers ('Here Comes The Snake') through romantic ballads ('When I Change Your Mind, Come Back To Me').
Summing up then...given the modern trend towards fast-paced, loud-as-possible rock and 'two beeps-one beep-repeat' dance c**p, this album really is a breath of fresh, original air. Stick it in your cd player and before you know it you'll be trying every jazz dance move you've ever heard of, I guarantee it.
