5.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth every penny. 14 Jan 2014

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
So good they deserve one of my longer efforts in the review. You need to be sure before you spend this much on gaming headphones! (I bought the XP Sevens as the Z Sevens were out of stock at the time. Only difference is the additional console adapter which I don't need, and I've only tested on PC so the review is relevant.)

Short version:
If you think £220 is too much to spend on good headphones, your doubts will die in a hail of glorious gunfire when you first get these set up properly. Some fettling is required in the software though. It is also not far off the combined price of an average set of cans, and a decent sound card or external DAC. Build quality and comfort are also in line with the premium, although take a week to become comfortable. If you can afford it, get them.

Background:
I put up with my Roccat Kave 5.1 headphones for 1 year. They sounded good and were of rock solid construction, but for me were very uncomfortable. I had to fit the headband with a junior padded seatbelt cover (not kidding) to make them bearable for more than 15 minutes. The other reason they had to go, was not really a fault of the headphones but my SFF PC.

The mic cable on my PC is on the front. The manufacturers of my mobo have not provided any kind of isolation or screening for this connection to the on-board sound components. This means the second I plug the mic in, I get a loud and distracting 50Hz hum in the headphones. It is also an M-ITX board so a PCI sound card is ruled out due to the GPU taking up the only slot. I checked with a friend's gaming PC to prove it wasn't a fault with the headphones.

I then tried buying a cheap external USB 5.1 DAC, but the sound quality and supporting software was just too poor. Enough was enough.
