Pandemic: On the Brink is an expansion to our popular cooperative game, Pandemic, wherein players take on roles to work together to find cures to 4 diseases. This expansion to Pandemic includes new event cards, new role cards, rules for five players, and optional game challenges to increase the difficulty, such as the 'Legendary' difficulty level, the Virulent Strain challenge, the Mutation challenge, and the Bio-Terrorist challenge. These challenges can be mixed together to make the game even harder.In this expansion you will find six new roles (plus 1 revised OpEx and a Bio-Terrorist), eight new special events, and several challenge kits to be added to the basic game play. Virulent Strain challenge: makes one disease become particularly deadly in unpredictable ways. Mutation Challenge: adds a fifth (purple) disease that behaves differently than the original four. Bio-Terrorist Challenge: pits one player against the others! You may also play with 5 players and play on Legendary level. Other components include: 12 purple disease cubes, 12 pawns in a smaller size, petri dishes to store your diseases and pawns, a bio-terrorist pad for that player to record his actions.

This is the best addition to a game that you can get. You get 3 new game types, a set of new roles, new special events, an extra epidemic (makes it fiendish)and new pawns a which are smaller than the original as well as petri dishes to keep all the bits. The three new types are 'Mutation' in which a new disease (purple cubes) erupts in random places and require curing. The second is virulent strain in which one colour has extra effects such as needing extra cards to cure and political experience. The third is bio-terroist in which one player tries to infect the world and slow down the cure.
These three game types are all worth playing and greatly expand the game though as a group we prefer 'Mutation' as bio-terrorist slows the game down and Virulant Strian requires concentration to rememeber which extra effects are in effect at one point.
The new roles such as 'Field Operative' and 'Trouble shooter' provide a lot more variation and with some will completly alter the game play. This is the best bit of this expansion
The new special events range for very useful (borrowed time- two extra moves) to not great (Rapid vaccine deployment) How ever as you no longer play with a full deck there is an element of luck as to which will be in play.
Overall this expansion represents a great value addition to Pandemic.

Not all expansions actually improve games. This is the best game expansion I have come across and gives PANDEMIC a whole new dimension. The original game is a lot of fun but can become repetitive after several plays..you only really vary the number of Epidemic Cards. ON THE BRINK means you can blend in aspects of the original PANDEMIC with the variants. For example, the 'Virulent Strain' epidemic cards, where one disease behaves differently and more threateningly than the others is a great idea in its own right. For variety, you can mix them in with some of original green epidemic cards or add other new factors. In short, the expansion gives you a huge repertoire or variety of game in content and difficulty with other new ideas like the Bio Terrorist and a 5th Purple disease to explore too.
Other things I like... the smaller playing pieces are an improvement, the Petri dishes to hold the disease cubes give the game a scientific stylishness, and being able to name each disease on the lid of the dish is fun.The 6 new player roles are well thought out. There are some blank cards too for you to add new roles or Special Abilities. All in all, if you like PANDEMIC, you'll love this!

My review is short and sweet as both 'Mad Geologist' and 'G. Page' have descrided 'Pandemic: On the Brink' really well and I agree with their opinion.
If you've been playing the original game (and it's great!) this is a brilliant expansion for it making the game even more diverse. The new scenarios are more difficult than the original, great if you really want a challenge, with my favourite being the new purple mutation strain. Also I like the new petri dishes - a little because they stop things from disappearing, but mostly because they look fun!
This expansion is definitely worth buying and can completely change the way the game is played.
