This film see's Yves Saint Laurent, through the eye's of his partner Pierre Berge. A farewell from Pierre to Yves. Pierre's sale of their precious art collection and the making of this film, possibly was part of the grieving process for him. Yet you feel that the relationship hit the rocks years before due to Yves excesses with drugs and drink.
Yves and Pierre's relationship came about because of Yves at Dior, yet Yves success and the pressures caused him to burn out. It's something I can relate to as I used to be involved in the design world, it's not glamorous but constant hard work, many burn out no matter how talented. These days I prefer to paint. Perhaps Yves should have retired long before he did, but work was in his blood and he carried on after sobering up for over a decade.
The extras on this dvd are excellent. These include interviews with those who worked closely with Yves. Plus visits to the couples homes and private views of their art collection. Pierre is dignified throughout the film, he allows us access, but not too much. Yves was a private person and Pierre still respects this.
Overral this is a very good film, a little slow at times, but if you have patience you will be rewarded.
