Product Description

Newly updated variant of the Yukon 5x42 Ranger Digital Night Vision Monocular.

Now features an upgraded Sony CCD for improved imaging. Coupled with the addition of a variable gain control dial (brightness/contrast control), this offers noticeable performance advantages over the previous model.

Because the unit uses a CCD with the image viewed on a built-in LCD screen, the unit cannot be damaged by bright light sources. Variable gain contol allows you to adjust the image based on an individual scenes lighting level.

The built-in high power Infrared Illuminator - the right-hand lens of the device - is covert (invisible to the human eye at approx. 940nm) and throws a beam out to over 100m. In ultra low light levels this provides the unit with its own light source. The power output of the illuminator is also controllable offering maximum flexibility in image brightness/contrast.

The unit offers true 5x optical image magnification through the left hand lens of the device. Currently competitive products can only achieve higher magnifications through digital magnification which means a loss of resolution.

A Video Out facility (lead included) means that the unit can be linked to a recording device such as a DVD Recorder/Video Recorder /Camcorder or alternatively to a monitor.

Running on 6 x AA sized batteries, the unit is supplied with two battery cradles (for quick battery change), a 12V car adaptor and a UK mains lead. The unit will happily accept the latest NiMH rechargeable batteries (2700mAh) - in fact, these are the recommended power source when out in the field.

A screw thread is built-in to the base allowing attachment to a tripod.

It does what the product description says.

Basically it's is a very sensitive black and white camera, and the image appears on a small screen, which is visible through the eye piece.
Unfortuneately you cannot reduce the magnification- when you would like a wider field of view - unlike a digital camera- hopefully they will change this.

The variable infrared is clever.
But when using full Infrared- it does eat up the batteries rather quickly.

But it is a good multipurpose unit- giving a quality picture 200m away in the dark.
The variable screen brightness is an asset.
Also being able to use 12volt and 240v-supplies- increases its versatility.

What is a big plus compared with the non digital units -is having a video out, which means it can be attached to recorders and monitors.

Monocular not binoculars but still good 30 Aug 2008
By neqchis - Published on Amazon.com
This product is a monocular not a binocular. The secondary lens is actually an IR beam. I've had this device for about a year. It has pros and cons over traditional night vision. Unlike Gen1 devices, the Digital Ranger is not subject to optical damage when exposed to bright light. Image quality is distortion free unlike Gen1 devices. The device sports a jack to record video. I use a camcorder with no issues however, the video quality is very grainy in 0 lux conditions. The device is rugged but also bulky and heavy. It chews batteries when IR beams are on and continues to drain batteries even when off. Rechargeable NIMH's are a must. The performance is acceptable but range is limited by the power of the integrated IR beams. Only the high beam is switchable, the low IR beam stays on continuously when the unit is on. The high beam power can be adjusted. Lens is 5x which is fine for long distance but not good for close spotting. It needs a 1x wearable goggle companion. Animals do not see the IR beams but IR from unit can be seen by other night vision devices. Overall a good buy for the price.

Its Ok. 23 Mar 2009

This thing isn't as good as it looks, the problems with it are it has a very narrow viewfinder and its magnified (zoomed in) to one point meaning its not adjustable, and you have to manually focus it which is really annoying.Since this thing is electronic it should have autofocus and zoom in/out.I'm giving this 3 stars because regardless of the above this thing is very professional grade (Made in Russia) and unlike regular Night Vision this is digital so you can use it day or night without damaging it,also it has a video jack to hook it up to a TV and the IR illuminator is really nice. But for the most part, aside from the Night Vision and it being electronic, its just another spotting scope.

Neat device, limited usefulness 7 Jan 2011
By Anopheles - Published on Amazon.com
Field of view so narrow that it's not really useful for night wildlife viewing of anything that is mobile or for searching (I was trying to use it for night birds). The focus changes too much with depth. I do think that it is very cool; for perimeter security or following large animals who do not move much, it would probably be great.

A few notes: it blinds you it is so bright, even with the brightness turned down. Because both pupils constrict when one is exposed, you will lose any semblance of night vision. This means you cannot use it, move and rescan. The field of view is much to narrow to safely walk with it. So it's useful from a fixed position only.
In wildnerness/forests with no moon or man-made light, it is only useful as far as the infrared beam shines. The light amplification is great in urban settings or moonlight nights however without the infrared beam.
The device is impressive, but it takes some getting used to. Give it time to adjust both focus elements (front and rear), the contrast and brightness.http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/communities/reviews/preview-active._V192249892_.gif
