For Karen Burns, a talented young photographer, it was only natural to go to New York to chase her dreams. But for all the promise, the thrills, and the glitter, there are temptations and there are deadly dangers that come with life among the rich and powerful. Get ready for the Nanny Diaries from Hell.

3.0 out of 5 stars An average supernatural thriller, 7 Nov 2007
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
'You've Been Warned' is James Patterson's 5th book that he has released in 2007 and this time he has had a go at the supernatual thriller genre for a change, teaming up with Howard Roughan.

The story begins when hopeful photographer, Kristin Burns is a nanny for the Turnbull family and is also having an affair with the husband of the family. Kristin then begins getting shocking and terrifying nightmares everyday and weird things start happening all around her, including seeing people who have been dead for a while. This then sets Kristin on an investigation into what the dreams mean and find out the truth behind these strange sightings, by using her trusty camera.

This book has it's good and it's bad points. First the good - it's fast-paced and quite exciting and you'll find yourself flying through this book in no time at all. The characters are pretty good and the mystery will keep you hooked and thinking the whole way through. The main bad point is that the ending is pretty rubbish and very predictable and will leave you feeling a bit disappointed once you've finished it.

Overall it is a fairly decent read that is full of twists and excitement, as you'd normally expect from a Patterson novel. The downside is that if you're after a good Patterson novel, it's not as good as his Alex Cross or Women's Murder Club series. And if you're after a good supernatural thriller you're better off reading a Stephen King, Dean Koontz or a David Ambrose. If you're after a quick, easy and enjoyable read - give it a go. If you're after a deep, involving and memorable book - look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Going against the majority...a rather unexpected read, 13 Jan 2008
In general, I think Patterson's writing has been atrocious over the past year. He is whipping out cookie cutter stories, even my favourite Alex Cross bores me to tears.

Yet, I continue to read and this time was not disappointed. "You've Been Warned" is a significant departure from Patterson's usual fare with new characters. This book is fast paced and unusual. I read the whole thing in only a few hours as I just had to figure out the whole crazy thing. The ending was a bit of a disappointment- he got to cute there.

If you put the thoughts of Alex, Lyndsey, and the usual suspects out of your head and want a quick, entertaining read, give this book a try. Frankly, its the best thing he has written in years.

Caveat to Patterson- take a year off, relax, stop bombarding us with cut rate stories. Then come back, refreshed, and blow my mind!

2.0 out of 5 stars "Something's very wrong", 20 Dec 2007
By Sebastian Fernandez (Tampa, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The quote in the title really works for describing what has been happening with several of Patterson's works in collaboration with other authors in the past few years. By now it is pretty clear, Patterson is only writing the Alex Cross series, and everything else is being written by the second author. Therefore, it is unreasonable to expect much from these efforts based on having liked Patterson's work in the past. Of course, these authors follow Patterson's style, but in many cases do not have the skill to deliver at an appropriate level.

This novel is one of those cases in which the final result is way below par, but when I think back through its progression, it is a really unusual experience. The reason why I am describing it like this is that while you are reading the book there is not much that is wrong with it, and in several parts it is entertaining. This is why it gets two stars instead of one. However, when I got to the end, I could not help feeling that the whole process was pointless. This is the main fault I see with this novel.

I can endure the supernatural aspects of the plot, even when the information of the jacket was totally misleading and made it sound like a mystery / thriller. But there has to be a point to the fantastic elements, or logic to them, and I felt that there was very little explanation and that the end of the novel came about very abruptly and without concluding the story. Therefore, all the goodwill I built while advancing through the plot, thinking that I would be rewarded for my patience, came tumbling down in a chaotic mess.

Also, if you are going to use Spanish, at least make sure that you are not making mistakes. In this day and age is pretty easy to get someone to check this aspect for accuracy, so the fact that the authors did not get a translation right, is a clear reflection of the poor job Patterson and his collaborators are doing in terms of quality control. I feel that the only thing that matters to them is to publish as many books as they can, as fast as they can.

I have already reached the point at which the only Patterson books I trust in terms of quality are those in the Alex Cross series. It is a shame that the situation has come to this.
