This is, quite simply, one of the most fascinating books I have ever read about my profession (Musical Theatre).

If you want a glitzy, coffee-table book which gives you a mass of photographs and anecdotes about musicals then ......this is certainly not it! If, on the other hand, you want a seering insight into what the musical is all about and what it is that is so desperately important about the genre, then read on and be captivated.

Put as simply as I can, Ian Bradley's theory is that Musical Theatre is not so far removed from religious experience and that the musical itself provides us with the escapist dreams which are so necessary for our very welfare and wellbeing.

Tracing the musical from Gilbert and Sullivan to Rice and Lloyd Webber, Rent, Blood Brothers and the Mega-Disney epics such as The Lion King, Bradley forces us to understand the musicals, not just to be entertained by them.

Dreams are very much the theme. Each chapter has the word 'Dream' somewhere in the title and each, like the title of the book is a quote from a familiar musical. The conclusion is as shattering as it is inevitable. "Musicals", says Bradley, "may over-romanticize but they also point to deep spiritual truths......" No, I won't finish it for you, that would be unfair to you, a potential reader and most of all to Mr Bradley whose book deserves your time and attention. I promise you that you will never view Musical Theatre in quite the same light ever again.
