Review

There is one significant difference between those who get a job and those who don t after being shortlisted. Successful candidates invest in research and understand the nuts and bolts of the recruiting process. They are prepared for each step - they know what to expect from an assessment centre and how to stand out in the interview. They are not surprised by the format of the psychometric tests and by the test's questions. They researched potential employers and their targeted industries and impress interviewers through their use of a common language. If you try to be successful without help from an expert, you will probably make many mistakes and fail to achieve your goal. This book is exactly what you need to acquire these critical skills and to avoid mistakes. You will be competing with candidates who put in the time and effort to be prepared. Job search is a unique type of competition: there are no second and third places, only one person will reach the finish line. The comprehensive advice in this book will help you understand the process and perform to your best whether you are due to attend an interview or a full scale assessment centre. You are then far more likely to be the one who wins the job. --Alon Karmiel, Founder of ZoomInterview.com

I can't really do justice to this book in such a short review but putting it simply it is absolutely the most comprehensive, helpful and easy to use guide for anyone facing an interview and selection procedures. What I really like is that it explains in detail what assessment for a job is all about, not just through interviews but all the other aspects that are so common today. These include psychometric testing, - finally someone who can explain personality questionnaires in a straight forward way and also assessment centres. As someone who has been through an assessment centre (sadly long before this book came out) this book would have proved invaluable for me being prepared for what I may face and given me some help with practice test sites and resources I could have really gained confidence from. There is a very clear structure to this book which means you can both dip in and out and also follow the whole process from preparing through to post selection if you want. I also really liked the chapter on presentations as it gives tips to help with short presentations which is more often what you asked to deliver within a selection process.

The best book on helping with getting selected for the job I've ever read. Simple but thorough, to the point, and well written. I'm recommending it to my friends and colleagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Step-by-Step Guide 15 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
This is an essential practical guide for anyone who has received the `you've been shortlisted' news and wants to get the `you're hired' letter. Readers are taken on the journey from preparing for the interview through to the success of being hired.

Denise's wealth of knowledge and experience in the field makes the reader feel like they have insider information into the world of the recruiter. Seeing the view from the other side may give you the edge required to successfully sail through to the job offer stage.

During these cut-throat times, when jobs are few and candidates are many, the importance of being fully prepared cannot be over emphasised. Critical interview techniques, including what questions you could ask at the end and the tricky salary question, are explained using examples, hints and tips. Psychometric testing and assessment centres are decoded through practical examples and exercises, giving you the confidence to walk through the recruitment process with confidence.

`Now you've been shortlisted' makes the process of getting hired, dare I say, fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and informative 14 April 2010
By Colette
Format:Paperback
This book is comprehensive and informative. It sets out what assessors are looking for and offers advice to enable targeted preparation time before interviews and all types of selection tests.

I found the step-by-step style of the book clear and helpful in breaking down the steps required to prepare and practise prior to attending any job selection event. The section on psychometric tests provides links to practise exercises online which I found invaluable. The book also illustrates the full range of different exercises that are used in selection (for example the different types of role plays, group exercises, written exercises, etc) which helped me to understand what is being tested in each case.

The book explains the whole selection process and illustrates what is needed to succeed. I think the book's thoroughness serves to reinforce the need for in-depth pre-work and the book helpfully points out the type of research and preparation needed prior to any assessment.

Denise has provided a user-friendly guide that demystifies the whole selection process - a highly recommended read.
