Reviews

SUPERBAD's Michael Cera discovers a vacation romance in YOUTH IN REVOLT, a teen comedy from CHARLIE BARTLETT's screenwriter, Gustin Nash, and director Miguel Arteta (CHUCK AND BUCK). The film is an adaptation of C.D. Payne's first book in a series of best-selling satirical novels starring Nick Twisp, a sexually charged 14-year-old whose intelligence and hormones get him into all sorts of adventures. Michael Cera, as nice-guy Nick, takes a masterful turn in a role in not altogether distant from his character in the modern classics, SUPERBAD and JUNO. Along with his trademark, nevertheless brilliant, take on adolescent awkwardness Cera delivers a delightfully edgy performance as the ever so slightly mental Francois, Nick's dangerous alter ego. YOUTH IN REVOLT shows the potentially funny side of a schizophrenic loon, and Cera is fantastic in a role in contrast to the usual nervy cuteness. With added delight from an exceptional comedic cast including Justin Long, Zach Galifianakis and Steve Buscemi, YOUTH IN REVOLT has been critically hailed 'a delightful film that makes no apologies for its irreverence.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmm... Give it a second chance 20 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
Having this highly recommended to me by a friend I was very eager to watch this, perhaps the hype was what made my first viewing of the film a relatively laugh free experience. But there was something about this film, a charm, that made me compelled to give it a second chance. And I must say I'm rather glad I did.

This little gem of an indie teen comedy is, in my opinion, just what this dying genre of "teen comedies" needed. Yes it some times falls flat, but luckily this film has enough of an original slant and charm to keep it trudging along until the end.

Overall I think it is a very sweet and funny movie. Yes, it has major flaws, however there is something about this film that I really like, and continue to like. I would highly recommend this film if you want to sit back and have a nice little movie to finish a long day.

For the record, the special features are pretty rubbish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cera in Revolt 25 Oct 2010
By SilentSinger TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I am a bit of a fan of Michael Cera although the does tend to play the same character in all the films that he's in, although this may be the fault of casting directors rather than the actor himself. This film's plot is based around 16-year-old self-confessed nerd called Nick Twisp whose dysfunctional mother's boyfriend's antics force them to holiday in a trailer park where he meets the beautiful and intellectual Sheemi whose interests complement his own, she is a bit of a francophile which leads Twisp to create a cooler French alter-ego called Francois Dillinger whose twisted plan to capture Sheeni's heart leads to a series of comic situations.

I did enjoy this film and the acting from a talented cast which included Portia Doubleday (Sheeni), Jean Smart (Mrs Twisp), Ray Liotta (one of Mrs Twisp's boyfriends) and Steve Buscemi as his estranged father all gave excellent performances. Some of it was fairly unbelievable at times, but entertaining all the same. I did love the scenes with Viyay, Nick's friend from high school, as he was very entertaining indeed.

A good film to watch if you're a fan of Michael Cera and at 88 minutes, it's short and sharp enough to maintain your interest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Michael Cera's rough side. 5 May 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Usually, Michael Cera plays that socially and sexually awkward teen that we've all seen in Superbad, Scott Pilgrim and Nick and Norah's infinite playlist. However, In youth in revolt we still see Cera's awkward side and then he later becomes rebellious. We see things that we wouldn't usually expect of Michael Cera and that's a good thing. I recommend this film because we see the transition of awkward teen to badass.

Michael Cera is a fantastic actor, this flick moves at a very enjoyable pace and cements Michael as one of America's best young actors around today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some tenuous plot elements, but still very funny
I got this film just on the strength of Michael Cera being in it, as I realised that I quite enjoy his brand of 'plucky geekery'. You definitely get that here. Read more
