The person who gave this 2 stars complained that he couldn't learn danish using only the CD's and whilst driving (what the hell?) so hopefully this will educate you better.

Danish is a vary hard language, I've been using Rosetta stone for a year now, and to be honest it's so interminably boring I don't seem to learn much from it. Constructing sentences in Danish is very difficult and this book helped me far more in a week than Rosetta stone did in a year. I think Rosetta stone is good for vocabulary building and pronunciation but I'm not sure how useful it is beyond that.

I would highly recommend this book but definitely recommend you build a vocabulary up first, start with basic objects from a Danish/English dictionary and if you can afford Rosetta stone, get it. When you feel a bit more confident and ready to find out what the differences between den/det are, or why some sentences seem to have words reversed 'kommer jeg til England'/'Jeg kommer til England', then this is the next logical step.

Finally I should remind you Danish is so much harder because many of the words are pronounced so differently to English; they have 9 vowels and a lot of the time their consonants are silent and they create new words all the time by amalgamating two existing words. Many words sound extremely similar to others and it takes a lot of practice to be able to speak comprehensible Danish to a Danish person.

Good luck.

This course follows a traditional approach, presenting conversation, grammatical points, vocabulary and exercises in each chapter. Everything is in black and white, and there are a few illustrations. It doesn't disguise the fact that learning a language is hard work and will probably take years to achieve any level of fluency. You do have to be prepared to go slow, and go back over things. You must get the book and CDs if you choose this course. The pronunciation is the biggest barrier to me in learning Danish - I eventually decided to stop worrying about it, and believed that it would come right over time - that helped me to make some progress.

I bought this product as it was implied as the best, perhaps even something extraordinary. The plan was to surprise my Danish partner by actually being able to converse (even marginally) when we went over to visit family and friends. We all learn in different ways, but I don't recall being in a cot with my parents speaking grammar or vowels in a "coochy coo" way, more I could relate what they said to my surroundings and learning by simple association... When my partner heard the CD she laughed and said it was like being taught English by someone with a broad regional accent; apparently many of the characters have a broad Jutland twang!!

The fact that the CD starts off with explaining the 9 vowels and how to pronounce them (if you can differentiate who's saying what and what the danish words mean) and then progresses straight to a conversation with unexplained phrases in Copenhagen's main station merely adds to the confusion. If you want to purchase a CD to learn the language then forget this (it does say at the beginning of the CD that it should be listened to along with the book, but this is after you have purchased it and reading a book whilst driving isn't to be recommended..). I can however now count to ten and ask fluently what someone's mother is called, but this obviously has limited application!

Fantastic way to learn! 23 Feb. 2008

I have only had this program for 2 weeks and I've learned a TON of danish, very well laid out, excellent audio quality, and I live in Denmark, and even my friends here are saying its quite well done. Its apparently a bit formal in the language, but far less so than any other language guide I've come across. Great book - the book is essential.

Not for Americans. Glorified/overpriced phrase book. 14 Oct. 2010
By Casual Fan - Published on
In my limited experience, I've noticed there are two distinct ways to learn a language. There's the "phrases first" way in which you learn a bunch of touristy phrases and then work your way backwards to the grammar/structure/vocab, etc. as you need it. Then there's the "grammar/structure/vocab first" way in which you're learning how to build your own phrases right off the bat. If you're looking for the first method, this book is as good as any, I guess, although the CD's are obviously thrown together and overall poorly done. The female narrator speaks with a fairly thick English (i.e. England - the book is published there) accent that's at times hard to understand. The actual audio on the discs only refers to blocks of text in the book and has very little translation in it at all. This means forget about any "learn in your car" approach. The discs are pretty much useless unless you have the book right in front of you. They switch constantly from a woman speaking Danish with with a UK accent to a man speaking UK with a Danish accent. About all they're good for is if you want to listen to people speak Danish for a few minutes at a time and have no idea what they're saying. Both the discs and the book are full of obscure UK references and high-brow situations (i.e. "Jens and Maria are having lobster on a yacht while discussing afternoon tea. Jen asks when the servants will be changing the silverware for dessert.") If you really want to "learn" the language and not just memorize enough phrases to get you by and impress your friends, I'd recommend the Hippocrene "Beginner's Danish" book + 2 CDs set Beginner's Danish with 2 Audio CDs (Danish Edition). It is MUCH better organized and is meant for people who are serious about actually developing the building blocks to create their own phrases instead of memorizing and poorly pronouncing mostly useless and silly touristy ones. If you're just trying to "get by" and don't mind translating everything from Danish to UK to American, this set will do you just fine.

Excellent way to learn Danish 19 Aug. 2008
By Betty A. Sanders - Published on
I have found this book and CD set to be very valuable for learning Danish. I only use it in my "spare time", and when I traveled to Denmark a second time, after only a few months of using this program off and on, I was amazed at what I could understand and read. I hope to see an advanced level course of this program very soon. (hint, hint)

Great Way to Learn Danish! 22 Nov. 2009

My father is Danish, and this spring when I went to visit my Danish family, I promised myself I would learn some Danish. Every day in the car to and from work I did the "sound it out" exercises, and at night I would do the book work. I learned Danish pretty well (speaking and understanding at least, not really with the writing), and impressed my family!

I would definitely encourage using this system! It's great for anywhere and you can learn fairly quickly, as long as you dedicate yourself to it.
