Teach Yourself Brazilian Portuguese follows the journey of Sylvia Peters on a 6-month trip to Brazil, as she endeavours to make social, cultural and business links for future exchange. The emphasis is on communication throughout with important language structures introduced through dialogues on the accompanying recording. There are plenty of exercises to practise the language as it is introduced, and tips throughout to help with pronunciation and grammar. Two revision units help the learner to check their progress halfway through and at the end of the course. Cultural information sections give useful advice and information for anyone planning a trip to Brazil.
The new edition retains the tried-and-tested structure of the lessons but has been updated with a new page design. Several new features have been added including:
- an English-Portuguese vocabulary to go alongside the existing Portuguese-English vocabulary
- a glossary of grammatical terms
- a 'taking it further' section to direct learners to further sources of real Brazilian Portuguese
The page design has been improved and section headings given in English to make the course easier to use for the self-access learner.

Sue Tyson-Ward is currently a part-time lecturer in Spanish and Portuguese at Lancaster Adult College and Chair of ALL Spanish and Portuguese Committee. She has extensive experience of teaching, examining and writing.

I'm studying this book and CD package alongside the official course material as I felt I needed some more basic grounding in Portuguese.
This CD and book does this wonderfully well with one caveat. Beginners in a language need hand-holding, it is true. To be able to understand the spoken word, the material must be crystal clear, distraction free with articulate speakers. This CD does this wonderfully well but slightly to the extreme.
I found that by speeding up the material to about 135% of the original speed it sounded a bit more natural and was a good introduction of what you might expect in real life. No native speaker would ever speak as slowly as the people on this CD, even if they were trying to!
Windows Media Player allows you to control the speed of playback (once ripped to MP3 format) so you can slow it down even further if there's something you can't quite catch, or speed it up as suggested above.
I can play this CD (at the faster speed) time and again in my car and get real benefit from it. I don't regret the purchase at all, just wish they would perhaps speak as clearly but at a more natural speed without me having to adjust the playback.
If you are a beginner then you will benefit greatly from this CD / book combination.

I returned this purchase not once but twice as when I put CD1 into my computer to play, it showed up with the title, Teach Yourself Russian'. It was just the title that was incorrect not the content. As I thought I might want to sell it on once I had worked through the course, I wanted it to show the correct information. Sadly the one that was sent as a replacement has the same faulty information. I gave up in the end. Faulty batch maybe.

I had to get the book and the CD separately and the CD came first. I could understand what was being said and the introduction implied that you could use it without the book. However many of the exercises require one to see things in the book, so in theory one could use the book by self but not the CD. It does show the difference between European and Brazilian Portugese very well, both the difference in pronunciation and the more relaxed grammar. It does not go into as much detail as DK Hugo's Portuguese in Three Months, which covers both European and Brazilian Portuguese.
