Product Description

Product Description

Teach Yourself Brazilian Portuguese is the course for anyone who wants to progress quickly from the basics to understanding, speaking and writing Brazilian Portuguese with confidence. Although aimed at those with no previous knowledge, it is equally suitable for anyone wishing to brush up existing knowledge for a holiday or business trip. Key structures and vocabulary are introduced in 18 thematic units progressing from introducing yourself and dealing with everyday situations to using the telephone and talking about the past.

Teach Yourself Brazilian Portuguese follows the journey of Sylvia Peters on a 6-month trip to Brazil, as she endeavours to make social, cultural and business links for future exchange. The emphasis is on communication throughout with important language structures introduced through dialogues on the accompanying recording. There are plenty of exercises to practise the language as it is introduced, and tips throughout to help with pronunciation and grammar. Two revision units help the learner to check their progress halfway through and at the end of the course. Cultural information sections give useful advice and information for anyone planning a trip to Brazil.

The new edition retains the tried-and-tested structure of the lessons but has been updated with a new page design. Several new features have been added including:

- an English-Portuguese vocabulary to go alongside the existing Portuguese-English vocabulary

- a glossary of grammatical terms

- a 'taking it further' section to direct learners to further sources of real Brazilian Portuguese

The page design has been improved and section headings given in English to make the course easier to use for the self-access learner.

A CD is available separately (0340912413) or in a pack with the book (0340912421).

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what it is supposed to be, 17 Oct 2003
This book is fundamentally the same as the previous edition and has inherited its problems and idiosyncracies. Very annoying is its method (or lack of it). It flits from one thing to another. When you think you are going to get some information on a language point, you get a sentence (or short paragraph) and then the book jumps to something quite different. It doesn't get to grips with anything. You can't learn much. Another annoying feature, more so in this new edition, is the big gap between what you read on the cover and what you find in the book. You spend your money in the belief that you are buying a course that will help you progress quickly beyond the basics (that's what it says on the cover). Then you find out that the course barely covers the basics. I teach the language and have a copy of the book but this is a course I would not recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Weak, 19 Feb 2011
This review is from: Teach Yourself Brazilian Portuguese (TY Complete Courses) (Paperback)
Apparently you are supposed to follow someone's journey in Brazil and learn from their experience, but you don't. Language guidelines are minimal and scattered. You never get the full answer to anything. The whole thing is feeble, there isn't a sound structural framework behind it.

Have recently started 1 to 1 lessons with a Brazilian teacher. Am absolutely delighted with what I learn't from this book before starting the lessons. Totally recommended for those determined to learn.

............I don't understand the other reviews. Sure its hard. When learning a language you have to repeat a lot over and over again, but things become clearer as you move on.
If you want to learn Brazilian Portuguese and have the determination, there's a heck of a lot to learn from this book and CD.
I recommend it.
