Product Description

Product Description

'Teach Yourself Biblical Hebrew' is intended for anyone who wants to be able to read and understand the Old Testament in the original language - language students, priests, clergy, interested lay people. Texts from the Old Testament are used to introduce the language and grammar, and no prior knowledge of any language study is assumed: everything is explained in clear English. The course covers: the alphabet, pronunciation, grammar and syntax, and there is a comprehensive Hebrew-English lexicon at the back of the book.

Having read a less than positive review for an earlier edition of this title, I decided to borrow a copy from my library, to check it out.
I liked the learning approach followed by the author, so I bought a copy and I am very glad I did!

Each unit has teaching, followed by exercises for you to complete, then you get a bible verse.
Not only is each word or concept encountered in the verse explained, but you are given a transliteration of the verse, showing the pronunciation and where the accent falls on the word.
Although reading Hebrew can be done silently, I feel it is important to follow the ancient tradition of reading or singing the scriptures out aloud? I think it is sensible to follow the modern Hebrew pronunciation, as that is what you will encounter, if you go to any website providing Hebrew passages that you can listen to, while you read the text.

Most of the Teach Yourself books come with a CD, but sadly this one doesn't. That is my only complaint about this book!

Excellent text book. Only fault - for those with failing eyesight the printing of Hebrew vowels is a bit of a disaster. The print is very unclear and small. I wish publishers would take account that many who would use this book are mature students whose eyesight may not be perfect.

Really good... 12 April 2010
This is a really good introduction to Biblical Hebrew. The only drawback is the small Hebrew typeface, and those of riper years may well have difficulty identifying the pointing. That apart, it is well written and a pleasure to use.
