Youri Egorov was an exceptional pianist and these recordings are all benchmark versions for me. His first EMI recording was of Schumann and his reading of Carnaval has all the refinement of feeling that would characterise all his recordings thereafter. His Debussy is a very fine achievement - I have never heard the Preludes sound better - while his two Mozart concertos show the elegance of his handling of the phrases and pulse of the music, as well as a quite special ardour. There is something sublime about his voicing of these Mozart scores which is unique to him. Anyone who needs convincing should look at his performances on youtube, where a Prokofiev 8 leaves one totally amazed at his fingers, their incredible agility, suppleness and strength. If any pianist's fingers could move you with the sound turned down, I think Egorov would very likely be the one! He also had a kind of ageless sense of things, one felt, so that in his twenties his interpretations already felt fully realised. His tragic death at the age of 33 robbed the world of a great artist and we can only wonder what he might have achieved since.
