Product Description

Against the backdrop of the demise of punk, social unrest and the coming to power of Margaret Thatcher, The Specials burst onto the scene with their unique brand of music in 1979 - sweeping up the nation's youth with their edgy, politically-charged message and iconic 2 Tone branding. 30 years later, as the band celebrate their anniversary with a reunion tour, their hard-hitting, poignant tales of teen pregnancy, knife crime and racism are still as prevalent as they always were.

Enjoy yourself 17 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
Having found an old copy of this author's previous book on this top band in a local library I was looking forward to the update. Forget HMV or Waterstones "Are you sure there's a book out?" get it from Amazon!

This book brings back loads of memories Manchester Apollo, drawing Walt Jabsco on my english folder, dancing in front of the stalls along to a showing of 'Dance Craze' at the Odeon in Manchester, recording the rock goes to college gig on cassette and playing it constantly.

This a well researched, informative account of the hey day of the band and also the 'wilderness years' for the group members; for some more creative than others before the reunion. What I find impressive is how Paul Williams contextualises the social, political history that was happening at the time- I remember the riots- and how the music of the band reflected this.

The only other thing I would have liked would have been a list of tv appearances and how many gigs were filmed for 'Dance Craze'? Where's the footage now? Quibbles aside I recommend this book wholeheartedly!

...that led to the forming, split and re-forming of The Specials.

Whether you were a fan of The Specials from 1979-1981 and wondered what went wrong to cause the demise of the band you loved, or whether you're just discovering them for the first time, now that six of the original seven band members have re-formed for their 30th Anniversary Tour, and want to know more about the history behind the band, then this book is for you.

The author, Paul Williams (no, we're not related), a.k.a. "Willo", has pieced together the facts surrounding how the band initially formed, found success, touched the lives of millions of teenagers and then imploded in acrimony at their peak in 1981. He has then gone on to detail events from 1981 leading up to 2008 when band members got back together and started to rehearse again and finally, to the end of 2008, when it was announced that the 30th Anniversary Tour was to take place in 2009.

It's a book of interest to any Specials fan and judging by how quickly tickets to their shows sell-out there are a lot of us.
