4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced tense thriller 13 Jan 2011
"This is a fast-paced, exciting thriller. A great read for a bit of escapism, suspense, and the occasional suspension of disbelief at the turn of events! A man with an uncertain past who has made good, has a lovely family, finds his pleasant world under sudden attack, but who from, and why? This is a real page-turner, short snappy chapters that kept me reading just one more..!

Will look out for more by this author.
I like Linwood Barclay novels too and think this is along those lines, similar tense plot and chase by the fraught but heroic main character to save his family, find the bad guys and discover the truth."

5.0 out of 5 stars Double trouble 13 Jan 2011
By Keris Nine TOP 500 REVIEWER
Thrillers don't get much more tense than when a child's welfare is threatened and in Gregg Hurwitz's You're Next there are two. One is the daughter of Mike Wingate, a property developer who has made a few mistakes in his life, but nothing so serious that his eight year-old daughter Kat should be threatened by two particularly nasty individuals. What is even more worrying to Mike is that the police seem more interested in him than in going after the criminals. The other child whose life has been jeopardised is Mike himself, the novel flashing back to show the strange circumstances in which he was abandoned as a child and left to fend for himself in a care home. There are a lot of gaps in Mike's past and it looks like someone is trying to fill them in for him. And not in a friendly way either.

Hurwitz knows that the emotive angle works well in this type of situation (there's a similar filling in the gaps situation in I See You where a man may have killed his ex-fiancée during a blackout), but particularly in a childhood context, and he manages to continually ramp up the tension to near fever pitch. But while he pushes the right buttons, the author also manages to show a great deal of originality in his playing out of the situation and in the characterisation. Nothing is gratuitously thrown in for thrills. There are a few shortcuts taken in Mike's progress from petty criminal to successful businessman and contented family man, but the gaps are where the heart of the conflict lies, establishing who Mike is and how he deals with the crisis when it comes to the crunch.

For every thriller cliché then, Hurwitz has an antidote. The typical big, silent thug, Dodge, is the sidekick to a villain with Cerebral Palsy.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, but not that good 1 Feb 2011

I did enjoy this but there were a few reasons why I was put off.
At the start the story is absolutely riveting and I really couldn't put it down. It is intriguing but after the revelation which is about 3/4 through, I really lost interest and I found the resolution quite unbelievable yet predictable.
I did love the humanity of Mike and his relationship with Shep.
On a silly personal level, it really grated on me how the writer insisted on informing us of them eating peanut butter and spaghettiOs constantly - I think I'd have been looking for a Big Mac!
Overall, the book was good but I would not compare it to Linwood Barclay. It was, however, well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars couldn't guess at this one 1 Feb 2011
I loved this and the story really kept me in suspense. I couldn't work out why the baddies were after Mike and his daughter and when it was revealed, I was very surprised. But this is what keeps you reading. It is very well written with brilliant characters and totally gripping plot. Brilliant.

3.0 out of 5 stars dips half way through 28 Feb 2011
Mike Wingate is married to Annabel with a seven year old girl; Kat. He loves being a family man, He is an honorable and honest man who just wants to do his best for his family but he is now under threat and he doesn't know why.

He was brought up in a foster home when his father left him at a playground at the age of four. He has had a few scrapes with the law in his early youth and had a talking down to from an elderly man whose car he vandalised which really made him think. He takes the rap for his best friend and does a little time in jail for him but after this he wants to put all that life behind him and he does.

He is a respected member of the community, a developer by trade and had just received an award for his environmentally friendly homes. He has his picture taken in the paper and is looking forward to perhaps a better life. However everything turns on its head after this, at the awards he meets a stranger how he really feels threatened by and he sees someone following him. He approaches the Police and is made to feel that he is the one who is wrong.

The story hurtles along with one thing after another and I read this book at every opportunity, during my lunch hour, on my five minute break...I couldn't put it down. However in the last quarter of the book we discover why they are after him and I felt that it dipped from here on in. The reason, for me was unbelievable but it ends up satisfyingly enough. When I was in the middle of this book, I would have awarded it the full star rating but by the end I decided on 3 stars as it was very enjoyable.
