5.0 out of 5 stars Another hilarious account of being a dad, 26 Mar 2006
By sarah davies (Cheshire) - See all my reviews
Was intrigued to see how this book would pan out after the hilarious first book by S Giles "Lad to Dad" and have to say, I wasn't disappointed. Parts had me giggling away to myself. Particularly loved the account of the birthday party with two grannys squaring up - can fully believe it.

An absolutely fantastic read which will have you in stitches along with sensible advice for fathers.

Can fully recommend this to anyone whether already a dad (or mum) or about to embark on parenthood. Well done Stephen! Looking forward to the next installment!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at best, 30 Dec 2008
By Mr. S. J. Claringbold "transmaster" (Carlisle) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The sub-title for this book was From Nappy Mess to Happiness in one year - the art of being a great dad.

Unfortunately the book does not provide much in the way of 'teaching' you how to be a good dad.

I bought this book thinking that it would be a great reference that I could look back on time and again but sadly I found this not to be the case. The book itself centres around Mr Giles and his son and his experience of fatherhood, in essence the book is Mr Giles' celebration of his child which isn't much use to anyone else really. Funny in parts it may be but I did find reading the book a tedious affair, I often read parts and thought to myself "Did that really happen, has he made it up or has he exaggerated it for the benefit of the book?" The funny parts themselves are cliched and could've happened to any man and child at any point. There are some factual information spots but even some of these are inaccurate and not thoroughly researched in great detail

All in all if you want a reference book and something that provides information on actually being a dad then this isn't the book for you. If, however, you want to read about Mr Giles and his 'amazing' son and stroke his ego then this is definitely the book for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars More time spent being a daddy than researching the book properly, 27 Jun 2009
A book about one man's experience of fatherhood? Fine.

But I came away with the impression that this was a book produced as no-brainer stop-gap work whilst a writer father took care of his baby - probably to his own child's benefit... but to the detriment of others. Had he stuck to telling how it was for him, the book might have had a lot of merit - he writes well on the way services relentlessly exclude men. However, he felt the need to combine this mission with advice giving, but seemingly without bothering to do the gruntwork of the research required to do that responsibly ie he's sometimes plain factually wrong, and sometimes communicates unevenly, failing to appreciate that there might be more than one valid position on some issues whilst pussy footing around other areas.
