Format: Paperback
This wise, practical and very inspiring guide is arranged like a dialogue, with each topic dealt with first from a yogic point of view, by renowned yoga teacher, Jenny Beeken, then from the medical point of view, by the experienced midwife, Sally Townsend. The result is a rare and valuable collaboration between the `alternative' and the medical that feels very balanced and reassuring.

We are shown simply and clearly how yoga can assist at every stage, from preparation for conception, to the postnatal period. Each trimester is covered, with yoga for the early changes such as tiredness, nausea etc, through the second trimester, with special notes on how to adapt yoga to `increase and enhance that feeling of wellbeing and blooming', through the third trimester, with sections on such useful topics as yoga for pregnancy-induced hypertension, `going overdue', and specific yoga for the month before birth. There is a clear section on the birth, with helpful postures to use and a comforting section on `yoga when things don't go to plan'.

Colour photos of pregnant and nursing mothers (and sometimes the babies and the fathers, too) - normal people, not models - increase the friendliness and approachability of this guide. A wonderful book for anyone interested in reducing the levels of intervention and painkillers in pregnancy, childbirth and postnatally, and in making it as natural and beautiful an event as possible. Highly recommended.

My daughter is pregnant and I'm going to be a granny for the first time. I'm a yoga teacher and was wanting a book that we could both use and refer to. This book is excellent. I love the way it's divided into trimesters with practices recommended for each stage of pregnancy. The layout makes it very accessible for all and the postures and sequences are well thought out and easy to understand. I recommend it wholeheartedly. I just wish we'd found it earlier on in her pregnancy!

This is ideal for any pregnant woman. The postures given are taught safely and chosen well (unlike many pregnancy Yoga books, in my opinion). The postures are taught with good attention to detail, so women can make the most of the practices. The book includes inspiration and quotes to support deepening of the (spiritual/psychological) experience of pregnancy.

Succinct, focussed, well written.

I recommend this book to all the women to whom I teach pregnancy Yoga.
