I ordered this book for my son (6) as I remembered owning it myself as a child (it has been updated!).

The book shows how fantastic your body is by breaking it down into machines - how it eats, grows, moves etc.

Really easy to read and visually enticing for 5-11 year olds. I would recommend keeping it for sharing for the younger ones as it has an interesting but question-inducing "How Babies are Made" section.

I can't recommend this book enough.

I bought this for my 4 year old and although she doesn't understand all the text I am reading she can see from the pictures what is going on. Having tummy troubles and visiting the hospital was very confusing for her so this book helped us explain how the body functions!! It is intended for an older child but obviously depends on the childs ability to take in information.

My son loves this book. For young children who are interested in how the body works some of the other books on the market are a bit too realistic and can be a bit "gory" for a child.

This book interprets all the body functions as "machines" and constantly refers back to the other machines in other sections. For boys especially they can understand the analagy of a "if we were to build a machine that did this, this is what it would look like".

The pictures are really clear, and it gives just enough information for my 7 year old to understand yet not too much to confuse.

Really love book and would recommend it.

I'm not sure which age group this book is aimed at, but the bit about making babies is a bit too 'full on' for my liking. Maybe I'm a bit too protective, but I still think bits like "the penis must get long and strong to reach inside the woman's body" is a bit too much information for a primary school child. I'm all for being honest and informative, but it's too much too soon. The rest of the book is fantastic, but for the previous reason it will be in the drawer for a couple of years yet!

I brought this book as my child was asking so many questions, and i wasn't sure how to answer them correctly!
When he recieved the book, he was eager to look through it, at which point he opened the book at what seems a bit 'detailed' about giving birth!!! *baby's head popping out of the mum! NICE! He's not even picked the book up since! And when i looked through it, it never had anything which he was asking about :-(
i shall put it away for when he's about 10!!!!!!!

A wonderfully illustrated book with a novel concept in explaining how the body works. More of this type of lateral thought should be embraced more in the education system.

This book was a favourite when I was a child for its quirky illustrations that fire the imagination, its comprehensive coverage of the different parts and functions of the body (skeleton, muscles, hormonal systems, senses and nervous system, blood, breathing etc etc), its matter-of-fact treatment of the then hilariously unspeakable subjects of sex and poo, and its clear, conversational tone. Great fun to read still as an adult, and covers lots of basics that are very useful reference for children (how a scab forms from blood ... how to tell if your teeth are getting plaque on them ... how smells work ... etc)

The book presents the body as a large set of overlapping systems and machines. It's a simplistic approach, perhaps, but it works very well indeed for getting across a fundamental understanding of the body's different functions and how they are fulfilled. Much much better and more communicative and interesting than many of the worthy-but-dull 'child encyclopedia'-type publications about the body that are (frankly) no fun at all and make one's body appear like a very boring badly taught science lesson instead of a fascinating internal world of ingenious efforts to survive.
