Book Description

27 Jun 2006
Thyroid problems affect an estimated one in three of the adult population, yet they are difficult to diagnose on the basis of blood tests and often go undiagnosed for many year. This is the second, greatly updated and revised, edition of Dr Durrant-Peatfield's practical guide to recognizing the signs and symptoms of thyroid disease and to treating the problem with diet and natural supplements, in conjunction with modern western drugs and surgery when really necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars So informative 30 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. I've felt for a long time I've got all the symptoms of hypothyroidism but blood tests came back 'normal'. Dr Peatfield explains clearly & precisely why the standard tests are inadequate and tells you how to scientifically diagnose hypothyroidism yourself and possible alternatives with regards to treatment.
I would recommend anyone who suspects they have a thyroid related condition to read this book.It takes you step by step through the physiology (even I could follow this), why things go wrong, signs and symptoms and treatment. It gave me the confidence to go back to my doctor armed with tests I had done myself. I have felt more enpowered about my situation since reading the book as I feel informed (probably better informed than many GP's on this particualr issue)and confident that even if I cannot get treatment via my GP (who insists I go back for more blood tests even though I've had more sensitive tests done myself) I know where I can go to get the treatment I need to ensure my condition does not get any worse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Thyroid and how to keep it healthy 10 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is excellent in the way it is written and the life saving content. After reading the book I also consulted with Dr. Peatfield, who is an exceptional, insightful and very kindly gentleman. Like many others I have suffered at the hands of the NHS for over 30 years (was put on thyroxin 20 years ago with no benefit) and now feel very hopeful as I embark on the adrenal support followed by the Armour thyroid. It is tragic and shocking that the General Medical Council so restricts G.P's today and I hope and pray that individuals will one day receive the treatment they rightly deserve and so badly need via their NHS G.P's. For years I have tried to tell G.P.'s the problem was my thyroid but as related by Dr. Peatfield in this book, if blood tests look normal they do not see the possibility of the synthetic thyroxin not actually working for the patient despite ongoing symptoms, which eventually leads to adrenal fatigue. The reasons are all very clearly explained in this book. If only more doctors would have the courage, knowledge and strength of character that Dr. Peatfield has to challenge 'the system', many more people would regain their health and maybe the General Medical Council would finally see sense. My offer to lend my G.P this excellent book was declined!

This book probably does save lives. It's very easy to read - just as though Dr Peatfield is talking to you - and it gives you all the information you need about thyroid and related problems. It's quite brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thyroid Information 28 Oct 2009
By Hannah
Format:Paperback
Having been diagnosed 8 years ago with ME my daughter has struggled with everyday tasks which so many of us take for granted. She has not been able to work or have much of a social life, sometimes needing me to wash and help her dress. She did the Lightening Process (a neuro-linguistic process) and had a small limited taste of life as it should be lived only to relapse again. I joined a support group who advised me to read Dr. Peatfield's book and on looking at the symptoms of hypothroidism I can see she has virtually all the symptoms. It is a superb book which is understanding of the limitations of the NHS's blood tests and offers alternatives. If you would like to understand more about the endocrine/thyroid system I would most definitely recommend it. It gives hope to so many whose lives are without quality.

This book is well written, and helpful to patients suffering from this debilitating condition. It lets you see why you are so ill when your doctor pretends you are well treated or there is nothing wrong according to your blood tests. Even when on treatment your adrenals can become sluggish causing symptoms akin to CFS and FM.
This book should be required reading for all GPs who really care about getting their patients well, as they profess to know nothing about the problems outlined here. sufferers know and have a testimony that these treatments work.
It empowers patients to further research and find treatment for their symptoms and shows how to tell what is causing what and how it should be put right.
No person with the symptoms of CFS, Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism, or Hashimotos autoimmune thyroid disease should be without this book.

This book has been an absolute eye opener. As I read it I recognised all the symptoms I have been suffering from for years. I have actually now met Dr. Peatfield at his clinic and he talks to you just like an ordinary person and acknowledges you know what you are talking about. Very rare with doctors these days. He is a life saver and now with nutritional treatment I am starting to get my life back once more.

This book has saved my life. I was misdiagnosed with ME 20 years ago. I spent at least half of that time bedridden and the rest of the time struggling miserably to have any quality of life. Then I read Dr Peatfield's book. I managed to source Adrenolyph and Armour Thyroid from the internet without a prescription. I began the adrenal support and started on Armour. I did improve a bit, but lost my nerve slightly. I felt I needed more support so I made an appointment to see Dr Peatfield. He immediatly diagnosed me with adrenal failure and servere hypothyroid and helped me get my medication doses right. That was 7 months ago and I am now leading an almost normal life after 20 years of very severe illness. Dr Peatfield said it will take a year to fully recover as untreated adrenal/thyroid problems damage every cell in the body. I felt a huge difference after only four months of following his advice. I am now able to excercise, work and have a social life. I no longer feel depressed, I feel optimistic about life. My IBS has totally disappeared I can now eat absolutely anything I want for the first time in 20 years.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anybody who has been diagnosed with ME, CFS, IBS or thyroid/adrenal problems. It is very clearly written. Dr Peatfield's prose style is very informative and entertaining at the same time. All the information that you need to recover is in this wonderful book.
