4.0 out of 5 stars A review I wrote for Y&Y magazine, 21 Oct 2011

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Be Your Own Tactics Coach (Wiley Nautical) (Paperback)
This title is a little confusing as it suggests the book is a way for you to coach yourself (as with Jon Emmett's first book). However, this second book complements the first, and both are needed for the self-coaching aspect to work.

Having said something that almost sounds negative, I need to state that the second book can work on its own perfectly well, as a collection of tactical tips. I have read a fair number of such books over the years, and what struck me most about Jon's writing is the lack of waffle. I would go so far as to say that 95% of the words on each page are solid, practical advice. No backstory, no silly asides, just great tips with clear examples. If only other textbooks broke things down so clearly.

You might not care for the cute boat names, but apparently research has proved this method will help people remember things!

If you're not as dumb as I am when it comes to tactical thinking you'll be pleased to hear that the tips within each chapter (e.g. starting, first beat) are arranged in order from simple to complex. Experts could begin at the back of each chapter, to find the more advanced techniques. Indeed it is a book to dip in and out of, after your first wander through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read, Follow, and Carry with You to the Boat, 7 Dec 2011
By Jennifer Langille - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Be Your Own Tactics Coach (Wiley Nautical) (Paperback)
I read Jon Emmett's first publication, "Be Your Own Sailing Coach," and feel his second book to be well thought out, and complimentary to his first book. "Be Your Own Tactics Coach" is a nice progression forward for Jon as an educational author and embracing the technicalities of a sport many find confusing.

To potential readers, you will find this book to be simple, straight forward, to-the-point, clear, and concise. He uses color coding, basic yet easy to follow illustrations, and just enough "quirk" to keep it fun, helping those with digest all the information using easy to recall words and naming schemes. Finally, both books in the series are an small enough to keep handy near, or even on the boat.

As a sailing enthusiast, both of Jon's books have made excellent gifts to anyone either interested in learning to sail, or simply interested in better understanding the sport.
