5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet 15 Dec 2010
By Ayries
First things first: is the original of this a classic? Yes. Is it better than this cover? You could certainly say so if you wanted. Does that actually make this cover bad? No.

I'd say the word for this cover is 'sweet'... low key, well sung (without overdoing any of the emotion of the song), nicely arranged and definitely worth a look if you're fan of that kind of thing. If anything this is a good example of how to make a cover your own without destroying the song altogether. If the very idea of a well known song being covered by another artist in another style horrifies you for some reason, however, you'll want to avoid it.

4.0 out of 5 stars expectations have a lot to do with it 14 Dec 2010
I admit I'm not a huge fan of Elton John, and perhaps that's why I really enjoy this cover version of one of his songs by Ellie Goulding. I agree with the reviewer who pointed out that her emotion is restrained rather than absent. The song is deliberately understated. Can't understand the point of view that emotional outpouring in music is necessary to render the song or singer 'great'. True, i don't think Ellie's voice is outstanding, but I really enjoy this cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not My Song. You Can Keep It Ellie.
Surely one of the worst cover versions in the history of pop music. What a complete waste of time, with a pathetically lazy arrangement consisting of a piano being played by an... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars no stars
Dreadfully repetitive piano ruins any chance of an interpretation. When I heard this I thought it was an X factor reject. Truly awful. An example of how to ruin a passable song.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bluffer Ellie Does It Again
Just awful. How do talentless 'singers' like this beat their talented peers and get the contracts so undeserving. This is badly sung. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Strange little version of a classic
Listen to adverts on TV at the moment, and you'll be bombarded by classic 70s/80s songs slowed down and sung mournfully with a minimal instrumental background. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Ellie Goulding
One of my favourite songs of the year. I think Elton John must be very pleased on this version of his classic hit.

5.0 out of 5 stars heartbreakingly beautiful
I profoundly disagree with the negative reviews. EG's emotionally constrained and tender version is very moving. Read more
