This is a very good album from one of the great performers and great survivors of rock. The word "legendary" is overused, but can be deservedly applied to Eric Burdon. Even so, when a rock performer turns 70 there is always a worry that any new work will just show a talent in decline, but not here. The man has still got it - his voice is in remarkably good shape and his ability to put over a great blues song is undiminished.

The material here is all blues-based in its many different forms. There is a powerful rocking opener in "Water," some more soulful funky stuff, elements of gospel and a terrific tribute to Bo Diddley (Bo Diddley Special) which is a great evocation of the man's spirit as well as a heartfelt thank you to him. Throughout, Eric is backed by a really solid, skilful band and has complete control over his delivery, with the same phenomenal power when he decides to unleash it. It's a very good, varied selection of songs.

Despite some terrific highlights, I'm not sure the material on this album is consistently great enough to make it a true classic, but it's a very fine piece of work. I really like it and warmly recommend it to anyone who likes well played and very well sung bluesy rock.

The black and white picture on the album cover shows Eric looking quite wrinkled with age but very characterful, a bit like his voice which is still in great shape and full of the drama which was always a feature of his singing from his earliest days with the Animals in the 1960s. You'd certainly never guess Eric is in his 70s, his voice still has lots of power and authority and he completely dominates every song.

The album was recorded in California and New Orleans features songs written by Eric, including a tribute to Bo Diddley one of his R&B heroes, as well as Marc Cohn's "Medicine Man" and Bo Diddley's own song "Before you accuse me", which is given a New Orleans makeover. Also featured are guitarists Johnny Lee Schell and Billy Watts, Jon Cleary on keyboards and drummer Tony Braunagel who co-produced the album with Eric. This is a great-sounding album of classic blues-based rock that doesn't sound at all dated and has lots of variety in the songs and arrangements, from the swamp rock of "River is rising" to the restrained Latin ballad "Wait" to the strident rock of "Old habits die hard". Excellent album from a great 60s surviver.

Excellent album, gritty voice some blues and some rock. Most of the tracks are part written by Eric, and according to his notes it's looking at the past but celebrating the future, he is after all only 70+! The tribute to Bo Diddley is classic and the whole work is finished off with a cover of a classic Bo Diddley number. Excellent album! Oh sorry I already said that.

Much as I am a great fan or Eric Burdon - a man with a unique, if sometimes flaky, voice - I am not a great fan of this album. To give you some indication, despite being a great fan, and despite listening to this CD either intently with the sleeve out (like in the good old vinyl LP days), or simply as background music, I can barely find much to say about it.

In short, this is a shadow of what Eric Burdon was and perhaps the sleeve notes, where it is the producer, not Eric, who thanks the musicians, suggests that the Eric of old simply did not turn up.

Although the lyrics are more introspective and worldy than usual, most of the arrangements are typical for many of Burdon's latter day albums (light bluesy rock). The voice is Eric with no mistake, but there's no memorable vocal delivery.

Unless you are an avid fan and/or a complete-ist, I suspect you might regret this. Unfortunately, I am both - and there is only one Eric Burdon. But as stated above, of all his albums (and I have more or less everyone except for some odd US compilations), this is probably the most forgettable.

The album serves merely as a reminder to go back and listen to some of his great work (mainly pre mid 80's in my view).

Sorry Eric mate. I grew up in the same area as you and your music has been with me since childhood so this review did not come easy.

A brilliant album by the greatest white blues singer this country has ever produced. At 71 he is a true bluesman.

I have been a long time fan of blues music and the Animals where one of my favourite bands on the 60s. This CD lives up to all my expectations.
