Product Description

Product Description

This is a practical guide for parents with premature babies. The author seeks to demystify complex medical information and advises on everything that can be done to help. She also deals sensitively with parents' emotional problems and includes many personal testimonies and case histories. The book is supported by Tommy's Campaign, an international charity funding research into prematurity, and royalties will go to Tommy's Campaign.

About the Author

Nikki Bradford is an award-winning author and medical journalist. She was formerly health correspondent for Good Housekeeping magazine.

Sandra Lousada is famous for her theatre photographs, her photographs of children, and her iconic portraits of such luminaries as Laurence Olivier, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave, Albert Finney and Julie Christie. Her photographs have illustrated many books, including, most recently, London's Parks and Gardens, by Jill Billington, and Hampstead Heath, by Deborah Wolton and David McDowall (both Frances Lincoln). Her book Public Faces Private Places: Portraits of Artists 1956-2008 will be published in September 2009, and will be accompanied by a major exhibition at the National Theatre.

First Sentence
Your premature baby may not look like the one in the baby milk adverts: in fact it's likely that he will temporarily look very different - sometimes disturbingly so, especially if he is very premature. Read the first page

Having a premature baby is scarey. There's so much going on, and as in our case, so little time! This book is a real help. It answers so many questions and gives you so much information. All the topics are covered in an open, frank and easy-to-understand way. Everything is in plain English as well, which helps. We can't recommend it highly enough. As far as we're concerned, it should be compulsory reading for all parents of a prem baby! By the way, our baby was born at 30 weeks, and is now doing really well, so don't worry if you're in the same situation. It'll be OK, trust me!!!

Invaluable 21 Jun 2004
We were lent this book by the Special Care Baby Unit when our son was born at 27 weeks. As first time parents suffering from shock at the early arrival of our precious son, this book answered all our questions. It helped us realise that many parents go through the same agonies and worries, and go on to bring their babies home eventually-however long the wait. We brought our son home last week after he'd spent two months in hospital....

My daughter was born at 25weeks and I found this book to be an invaluable source of clear and useful information. It helped me understand what the doctors were telling me and enabled me to discuss with the nurses caring for my daughter issues arising from her infections and the treatment of them. The section 'How We Can Help' gave me confidence to interact with my daughter even when she was very poorly. The book is written sensitively and clearly. It is beautifully printed, has some wonderful photographs and is one of the books which our SCBU recommended to me. I would highly recommend this book to any parent or grandparent of a premature baby.

not so much 0 - 5
good for when you're in the hospital but not so much for when you're at home and settled in, don't really see it helping past a few months let alone up to 5!
