Review

If you want to learn about what Big Society represents on the front line, in neighbourhoods, and in people's lives - this book is a great place to startA" Lord Wei This book is an extraordinary gift because Martin always has one foot in the realm of specific deeds and acts - and another foot in the realm of ideas, of vision, of possibility.A" Dr Edgar Cahn Martin Simon is not just an outstanding social entrepreneur, but a pioneering interpreter of new ways of thinking and acting. What he's done here is to bring together an up-to-the-moment account of the phenomenon of Time Banking (with one new Bank setting up every week here in the UK) with the latest thinking on delivering public services and rebuilding communities in radically different waysA" Jonathon Porritt This is not a book just for reading. It is one for throwing over ramparts and stealing into the citadels of power." Ed Mayo

This is an important book. It is the first proper book about time banks published in the UK, which is important in itself, because there are now over 200 of them and the movement has not been properly recorded - and this book is by the UK founder of the idea. But it goes way beyond the mechanics of time banking to look at the urgent reasons why we need a more co-operative society. But it is also fun to read, and to dip into, beautifully designed with quotations, facts and stories. Anyone who wants to get to the heart of what the Big Society could have been, but wasn't - so far anyway - should read this book

Travelling back and forth between the past, present and future to provide the evidence necessary for a compelling solution to rediscover how to build relationships and communities, Martin Simon provides a socio-economic context and examples of community practice that demonstrate that Timebanking is a powerful, meaningful, life- transforming, inclusive, educational, empowering, fun and doable system for a sustainable world. The book is well documented and easy read. It will appeal to those who are looking for innovative ideas that have been tested and can be replicated to generate sustainable and thriving communities anywhere.
