5.0 out of 5 stars A literary collaboration that actually works, 2 Feb 2008
This review is from: Your Messages (Paperback)
Your Messages is the result of a highly inventive online collaboration which ran during November 2007, where contributors were given a single day to write a response in exactly 300 words to a message of exactly 300 words created by Lynne Rees and Sarah Salway.

It is the same format that Rees and Salway used for their Messages collaboration. But these two women are experienced authors. Throwing the idea open to all and sundry could have been a disaster.

But it isn't. In fact, the quality of pieces in this collection is remarkably consistent and extremely readable. Humour, pathos, invention and tragedy abound, with the contributors squeezing every last drop out of the short word count.

There are many great lines scattered through these compositions, shining pieces of description or imagery that raises a smile or prompts a tear. It is genuinely that good.

As an added bonus apparently all the profits of the book are going to children's charity Kids Company.

Contributors: Sandra Andrews, Joanna Ashwanden, Alison Baldwin, Jim Barron, Gina Benson, Claudia Boer. Alison Burnside, Sarah Charsley, Annie Clarkson, Zoe Crosse, Rachel Crowther, Michael Curtis, Zinnia Cyclamen, Patricia Debney, Sarah Dunnakey, Ken Elkes, Leigh Forbes, Frances Gapper, Nicky Gould, Clare Grant, Rachel Green, Oz Hardwick, Kathryn Harriss, Deborah Heath, Alex Johnson, Lousie Laurie, Michael May, Bob Merckel, Yvonne Moxley, Brigita Pavshich, Sylvia Petter, Mary Rose Rawlinson, Pauline Rowe, Cath Selby, Caroline Smailes, Judy Tattersfield, Cally Taylor, Wendy Taylor, Bill Trub, Catherine Walter and Jamieson Wolf.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Collection of Messages from Participants, 22 Nov 2009
By Literary Media's "Reviews" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Your Messages (Paperback)
I've still to receive my copy from the Publishers but as I'd like my book reviews to be read widely, I've just ordered my copy from Amazon and just got my copy today (28.11.09)!.

A selection of about 34 messages were taken from entries from participants worldwide - it was a competition held in November 07 and drew a lot of interest from a number of talented writers. The idea was to write a message in response to a sentence posted on the Your Messages blogspot website by the two authors who had organised this competition.

Participating entrants for both the 2007-08 competitions can be found at:

As there is limited availability on this book on the main Amazon site you can find more copies on the UK-Amazon.

It was truly amazing how many participated, including myself, took part and thoroughly enjoyed the 'writing competition'; it was a rewarding exercise in thinking up ideas/thoughts/reflections of a continual prose, article, Play/Dialogue-type message, sparked off my the sentence posted that day for the whole month in November.

I enjoyed participating in this 'literary exercise/competition' and went on to participate in the follow-up of this popular project in November 08; the selected Messages are diverse yet follow a certain theme the two authors had chosen as a thematic objective for the book of Your Messages, as a whole.

I'm looking forward to receiving my copy and re-reflecting on the selected messages for the book and I'll now add to this review as that much coveted copy is in my hands as I write (finally and at long last!).

I'd forgotten how enjoyable it was to read such aspiring messages by talented writers.

From the initial message of the first 'sender's' philosophical approach to viewing the world, they become more intimate and direct, starkly so at times and highly imaginative, from different dialects to prose, poetic stanzas, monologues, novelets, running commentary-type messages to ones resembling text messages and those with subtitles similar to those in self-help guides, giving the readers a varied scope of writing styles to juggle with when thinking of ways to adapt numourous ideas in sending messages across to others as far reaching as Santa, with humour and a difference. Truly inspiring.

A refreshing way to start off a prose/poem/dialogue/diary-like writing/dialect choices/general monologues.
This is a good exercise in helping novice writers and experienced ones alike, to think of approaching a novel/play/poem from a fresh angle.
