This book holds everything you will ever need to know about growing veg in your garden or on an allotment. My husband's Gran pasted it on to me after using it many years. Now we have an allotment and it's invaluable. It even has a few recipes to help you eat your terrific home grown veg, ways of preserving your fruit and veg and how to make wine from it. It's as fun to read as it is to grow the veg. Buy it!

This is by far the best book ever published for full, clear, simple, inclusive, friendly, beautifully illustrated, seasonal instructions for growing your own fruit and vegetables. Also what to do with them after you've grown them, with recipes for jam, wine and food. Also a brief history of g-y-o and allotments, details on crop rotation etc. I have used it for many years and purchase spare copies for nominal sums, as my original paperback version has long since worn out, and also to pass on to gardening friends as a worthy gift. I often look at the illustrations, drawings, woodcuts and paintings as well as photos and rejoice in the care that has been taken. Totally brilliant, also with the patina of 70s pre-computer reprographics, but in most other ways quite up to date. One exception: the info. re some pesticides especially gammaBHC and chlorinated hydro carbons is dated - aren't they now illegal for environmental reasons? But this is a minor caveat considering the book's other merits: so if you are at all into g-y-o buy a copy now!
