I had never heard of this author before and picked up the book in a discount book store, not expecting much. The opening, however, is one of the best I've ever read; funny, exciting and honest. I'm not a big fan of books about drug culture but this is about much more than that. The hero is likeable and believable. The peripheral characters are hilarious and well-drawn. It is hugely entertaining and has good points to make about why we feel the need to turn to drugs to get a buzz or to escape difficult parts of our lives. More than anything it is a great account of someone growing up (reluctantly). If I had to criticise I would say the plot tends to meander a bit but at least this makes it unpredictable. In all, a superb, entertaining and clever story.

"All this. Raves, techno... I mean, couldn't go on forever, could it?"
Is he taking the piss?
"Why not?"
"Well, can you imagine still doin' this when we're forty-five? How sad would that be?"


Obviously. There's more to life than American superhero comics and twelve-inch singles; but John Santini suspects, not much more. He's quite settled as it is. He has a small but perfectly formed circle of friends, tolerable flatmates and he earns just enough money cutting hair for Louie the Greek to go out and get blasted every Saturday night.

However, John's cosy little half-life is about to be blown apart. Firstly he falls in love - always a dangerous move. Then a journalist friend of his gets wind of a hot story. Soon John finds himself sucked into a sinister chase around the nation's nightspots that will force him to confront his deepest, darkest fear: he might actually have to grow up a little.

A novel of cold truths and hot pursuit, movong from the clubs of London to the leafy suburbs of Bradford. In 'Your House Is Mine' things don't always work out as planned.
