Product Description

Product Description

For want of a nail the shoe was lost For want of a shoe the horse was lost For want of a horse the rider was lost For want of a rider the battle was lost For want of a battle the kingdom was lost And all for the want of a horseshoe nail. The book deals with what is arguably the most important area of horse healthcare - the maintenance of healthy feet. Lameness is the biggest single cause of suffering and layoff for the horse, and 90 per cent of lameness is connected with problems in the foot.

About the Author

Alison Schwabe was born and educated in Cambridge and teaches animal husbandry there at the University Veterinary School, specializing in horses, cattle and sheep. Alison is also in charge of the welfare of a group of resident horses used for teaching veterinary students handling and clinical skills. Her interest in horses' teeth began when, as a child, her father gave her a copy of Galvayne's Horse Dentition (1888). Since then she has collected over 100 specimens of horses' teeth, and photographed many more. Alison regularly plays polo and goes drag-hunting and hacking on her own horses when they are not taking part in veterinary classes, from live anatomy to ultrasound scanning. She is secretary of the Cambridge and Newmarket Polo Club, senior treasurer to the Cambridge University Draghounds and area co-ordinator for Pony Club polo in East Anglia. She also finds time to write for polo magazines, and has published articles on horse handling and behaviour as well as scientific papers on a variety of veterinary topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for horse-owners, 24 Feb 2003

This review is from: Your Horse's Feet (Allen Photographic Guides) (Paperback)
The Allen Photographic Guides are invaluable both as an introduction to an equestrian subject and as quick-reference guides for horse-owners in a hurry (which of us is not?). Your Horse's Feet is no exception; as well as an informative text it provides clear photographic examples of foot problems, remedial shoeing etc, and gives some excellent advice on general foot care. Recommended as a handy guide for the busy horse-owner.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short and simple, 19 May 2010

No frills- extremely short for such a complex subject. Recommend to complete novices, but will not make the earth move for anyone with a basic foundation of knowledge. Photo's are very good however.

4.0 out of 5 stars No hoof no horse, 6 Aug 2003
By "xspursnwhipx" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Your Horse's Feet (Allen Photographic Guides) (Paperback)
I LOVE the allen guides! What better way to learn than to get right in there and see it. Sure its not the same as shoeing thousands of horses or picking out the feet of millions but this is second best. A picture is worth a thousand words. And if you're a pre-vet student or a bacyard horse owner you should really know all there is to know about your horses' entire base of being- his feet! This book makes it enjoyable and educational too!
