5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for woman! 28 Jun 2012
Format:Paperback
This book blew my mind,. I had to take notes on almost every page. I am not yet married but from the way Sheri Shepherd writes in this book, I can tell that marriage is definitely something worth looking forward to, as well as something that requires a lot of prayer and commitment. I read the book in less than a week, I just could not put it down. Sheri writes from her own personal experience about the challenges she goes through as a married woman, and how she manages to conquer and move on victoriously. Her use of bible verses, and the princess prayer at the end of each chapter adds more volume to the content in this book. Sheri Shepherd shares 14 truths that will forever change the way we are loved or love.. Here is the outline of the 14 points she discusses:

Desiring a "Happily Ever After"
Desiring a Godly Man to Marry (For singles)
Desiring to leave a Legacy for my loved Ones
Desiring God's design that me and my man become one
Desiring God to give me the power to remain pure
Desiring to give and receive Love
Desiring to embrace my new life in Christ
Desiring to become a woman my man can lead
Desiring my son to grow to become a man of Faith
Desiring a miracle to build a new foundation of Love
Desiring expressions of Love and Romance in my marriage
Desiring to believe God can change a man and save a marriage
Desiring to glorify God by showing honor and respect
Desiring to surrender my whole heart to my Lord

Let me share with you two of my Favorite quotes in the book;

>Don't put your purpose on "pause" while you wait for a man to push the "play" button so you will be free to live today with passion and joy, even as you are driven by eternity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just Okay 26 Jun 2012
By Jennifer Faulk - Published on Amazon.com

Recently, I got the opportunity to read Your Heart's Desire by Sheri Rose Shepherd.

From the publisher...

Hope and healing for every woman who has ever loved a man
Bestselling author and Bible life coach Sheri Rose Shepherd shares 14 truths that will forever change the way you love and are loved. This book is written for the married woman who loves her man but struggles in her marriage. It's for the single woman who wants to find a godly man to love and for the divorced woman who believed in her marriage until her man walked out.

Each chapter has life-challenging love stories, love coaching, powerful prayers, inspiring scriptural love letters, and a Transforming Truth.

If you're ready for a refreshing perspective on love, men, and marriage, this book is for you.

I came to this book expecting to learn something new about marriage. The book promises, on its cover, that it contains "14 truth that will forever change the way you love and are loved." With a promise like that, you would think that there would be some earth-shattering advice within its page. What I found, though, was that the book gave a lot of simple advice that bordered dangerously close to cliche. It wasn't profound or especially deep. I don't think the author came in claiming to hold some secret truths to changing all marriages. She was refreshingly honest and open and gave advice that would be helpful. It's as if the person who wrote the back cover didn't read the book and tried to make this author's valiant attempt to encourage ladies into a book that she never intended it to be.

That said, I appreciated the author's honesty, her transparency, and her willingness to share the harder parts of her own story in an effort to help other women. Having been married a much shorter time than she has been, I hesitate to do anything but applaud her efforts to teach younger women from her own experience, to minister to those who are hurting, and to give hope to others. However, there were some points that she made that I felt were actually detrimental to women who are seeking wisdom on godly marriage. After doing a beautiful job of explaining a man's leadership in marriage and encouraging women to gladly accept the covering that their husband's authority lends (which is completely biblical!), she diminishes her own enthusiasm for doing so by using a quote from a popular, secular movie -- "The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants." In other words, go on and be the godly wife Scripture calls you to be, ladies... you can still be in charge of your man. Perhaps this wasn't her intention, but this was a point that could be gathered from what she wrote.

At another point, she criticizes another author (one whom I particularly admire) by saying this -- "Christian leaders are overwhelmed by the miserable marriages they are trying to help. They are doing the best they can but feel as if they have run out of answers. They have come up with some pat answers in an effort to bring relief to all the loveless and lonely marriages in the church. They've settled for phrases like, 'Marriage was not made to make us happy. It was made to make us holy,' or 'Marriage was never intended for romance.'" I totally believe that there are pastors and leaders out there who give "pat answers," but lumping them all together in a category is wrong. And a pastor who truly studies, knows, and teaches the word of God is NEVER out of answers! She takes offense with the view expressed in the quotes she listed (see above), using the Song of Solomon to show readers that God intends marriage to be intensely romantic, exciting, and thrilling. If all seasons of marriage were like the Song of Solomon, we would all be EXHAUSTED. I say that as someone who really does love her husband with that kind of intensity, but I'm betting that there will be a day that I don't want to spend all day loving him like Solomon's young bride loved him. Just saying. Using just one portion of Scripture to make a point while ignoring the whole teaching of Scripture -- that life is less about my happiness and more about making much of and glorifying God -- is unhelpful, especially to, what the author calls "loveless and lonely marriages." I totally agree with her that marriage can and should make people happy, but we're selfish, self-centered people. Therefore, as God uses marriages (those that are difficult, those that aren't so difficult) to make us more holy and less selfish, He makes those marriages happier because He changes the people in them. A happy marriage built on anything less than being made more like Christ misses the point entirely.

I can think of a few books on marriage that I would recommend before this one Sacred Marriage and Sacred Influence by Gary Thomas, Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs, The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, and The Peacemaker by Ken Sande (not a marriage-specific book, but VERY applicable to marriage) are ones that come to mind automatically.

Many thanks to Tyndale House Publishers for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions expressed are mine entirely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be sure to read this one 12 July 2012
By lighthouse88 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author, Sheri Rose Shepherd, is sold out for God. In this enlightening resource book, she gives advice, encouragement, and hope for women's relationships with men from a godly stance through stories from her own life. She also intersperses some very short fictional stories as well to make a point. Each chapter contains Scripture at the beginning and end, a specific topic for that chapter, a prayer regarding the topic, some advice or "coaching" about the topic, and a fictional love letter to the reader from God. The book is very easy to read and the chapters are not too long. Her writing style is easy to understand as well.
Sheri shares from her own painful past and choices she has made with the resultant consequences in order to show God's ability to heal and use pain for profit. She tells how blessed she has been when in times of pain or difficulty she has surrendered to God and trusted Him to direct the outcome. The topics covered are relevant to women today in their interactions with men.
She challenges women to love their men the most when they least deserve it...just like the Lord does for us. Another challenge she issues is that "even if our men have given us every reason to give up on our relationships with them, we must not give up our God-appointed position of influence in their lives." There are other topics discussed that will make the reader think about their own relationships. She states, "Our lives may not be the ones we have longed for, but the greatest testimony is not how we started but how we finish."
There is something in this book for women who are single, married or divorced. Sheri does a good job of showing women that their place is as a helpmate to their husbands, which doesn't mean doormat. Husbands are the captains of the ship, but wives are the radar she says. Above all else, God is to always be the center of our lives and to have communication with Him regularly so we can have a deep, abiding relationship with Him. She reminds women that they are creating a legacy by how they live their lives for the next generations, whether good or bad. What kind of legacy will you leave behind?
My Rating for this book is four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air for Your Marriage 26 Jun 2012
By Taylor Christine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Your Heart's Desire by Sheri Rose Shepherd is like a breath of fresh air for married couples who need a bit of inspiration and motivation in their marriage relationship. Each chapter has a theme and contains real life stories, scripture, and encouragement for married couples. Sheri shares struggles about her own marriage and her childhood growing up in a split family.

I am often weary of reading self-help books, but I wasn't disappointed by Your Heart's Desire. Sheri is honest, and doesn't fluff up the realities of marriage or make the reader feel like her marriage is terrible in comparison. In some Christian circles, discussing the ugly parts of marriage and the hurtful things spouses can do to each other every day is not readily discussed. This can leave some young unmarried Christians thinking that Christian marriage is pretty easy compared to dating. I learned quite quickly in my own marriage just how difficult the joining of two individuals can be. While reading this book, it was almost like sitting down and chatting with a wiser, more experienced married Christian woman.

This book would be great to go through at a woman's Bible study and would be a great bridal shower/pre-marriage book as well. I wish I would have read it before I got married. If you need a boost in your marriage or just some spiritual food for thought, I think you'll enjoy Your Heart's Desire.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of Your Heart's Desire from Tyndale Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless & Ageless 21 May 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is funny, real, and heart opening. It should be a pre-requisite for all ladies. I've enjoyed reading it and cannot wait to hold a women's bible study. If more women loved , respected , cherished their men like this, marriage counseling and divorce would be in a decline. Reading this book felt like she was a girlfriend in the room sharing her stories. I'm blessed to have what I've already been doing in my home, confirmed. This is for any mature enough age and timeless forever.
