Product Description

Product Description

Genes and the traits they produce are passed down because in general they have or had an evolutionary purpose. Sometimes just knowing that a problem you have is inbuilt and part of a genetic package can be helpful in the way you deal with it. This volume is a useful guide for anyone who wants to learn more about how genes affect them and their family's everyday lives. Structured around the human life cycle - starting with babies and ending with death - this title addresses issues such as the determination of personality and physical characteristics, the likelihood of disease, sex and risk-taking. In conjunction with research into family history and awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses, this book can help readers to maximize their environment and avoid problems.

I enjoyed this book. Whilst to some it may be worrying to predict our chance of suffering from some personality trait or disease, this book actually reflects very well the challenges and complexity of genetic risk. It also addresses potential measures one can take to prevent some diseases through changes in our environment. Some genetic knlowledge is crucial for all of us as rapid changes are occuring in medical care and diagnosis. Medical therapies will soon be adapted to our genetic make up and genetic tests readily available for an increasing number of diseases. The book also gives insight into the interactions between our environment and our genes. With humour and examples of the up side to all genes - it avoids fatalism and a depressing feel.
The style is easy to read with real life scenarios introducing each disease or trait which most of us will feel familiar with. The scientific jargon is kept to a strict minimum so anyone can read it. Overall its a fun book-packed with facts that takes us through the role of genes in our lives from birth to death - I particularly liked and was surprised by the genetic influence on most aspects of our sexual behaviour and childhood behaviour. I gave it five stars.

Sticky Fingers 16 Jan 2004
By Joanne
This is a great little book. The cover is a remake of the famous 'Sticky fingers' Rolling Stones album cover (which for some reason Amazon dont show). Its an easy read - with sections you can dip in and out of - containing many 'real-life' case studies you can relate to from childhood to old-age exploring the influences of nature and nurture - with some surprising results. Although in some areas I would have liked more detail, it does have many references and it feels very up to date - with for example discussion of the recent cot death / genetics case. Compared to Matt Ridley or Steve Jones - it contains less jargon and will be easier for the non-scientific reader and is the first book Ive read that tries to cover the whole of life in small chunks. Its main advantage is that it is witty and entertaining - I gave it top marks - highly recommended.
