Book Description

1 July 2005 "Which?" Guides
In recent years the financial climate has given increasing cause for concern. Endowment mortgages have left millions short-changed, promises of a good pension have evaporated, investing for a high income can cost you your capital, while raising extra income from your home transfers unreasonable amounts of equity to a financial firm. You don't have to be a victim. Whether you want to manage your finances yourself or simply be in the driving seat when you get financial advice, this guide will equip you with the knowledge and techniques you need. In simple language, with numerous case studies, tips and flow charts, Be Your Own Financial Adviser shows you how to identify your financial needs and create a plan to meet them without falling into the traps of unsuitable products, high charges and hidden risks. The book explains (1) how to interpret details from product providers (2) where to get up-to-the-minute information (3) how to identify areas where you could be losing out or taking unnecessary risks (4) how to build a robust investment portfolio to endure changing conditions (5) how the law protects you plus much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vital reading for any spender or saver 19 May 2008
Verified Purchase
This excellent book takes the lid off the UK finance industry and demystifies all kinds of products we take for granted. Coupled with the Motley Fool investment guide and Martin Lewis' own website, I make all my own financial decisions with confidence and boost my savings by not having to pay commissions to greedy reps of the large financial organisations. This should also be essential reading for all school leavers before they fall prey to commission and fees based products for the rest of their lives!

After years of paying institutions for mediocre advise and returns on investments, I feel a lot more confident running my own show. With the backing of Which, this book contains good practical advice you know you can trust.

3.0 out of 5 stars Out of date! 31 Oct 2010
This book was supplied promptly and in good condition and has lots of good information but is a few years old now so a lot of the information is out of date.

The text is a bit staid and "safe".

The book was however well worth the few pence plus p&p that I paid.

It's fine, however, most of the info is available on the internet but it will come in handy for reference.
