'The film book of the year. Reserve your copy now.' HOTDOG

The definitive guide to the history and location of Britain’s most famous cult movies, from A Hard Day’s Night to Trainspotting, with dozens of new interviews, unseen photographs, maps and film sites – and how to find them.

"You’re a big man, but you’re in bad shape"; "I demand to have some booze!"; "Choose Life…"

A Hard Day’s Night, If, Performance, A Clockwork Orange, Get Carter, The Wicker Man, Quadrophenia, Withnail & I, Naked, Trainspotting…

In the 1990s an industry has grown up around certain British cult movies – soundtracks, videos, internet sites and fully-fledged cinema reissues. The makers of these films have become icons of cool, revered throughout the worlds of film, music and fashion. But what makes these films into lifestyles? Your Face Here will tell you why and how.

Ali Catterall and Simon Wells have talked to writers, filmmakers and eyewitnesses, and scouted dozens of location sites to create the definitive history of and guide to over thirty years of British cult movies. Fully illustrated.

From the Author

Diary of a book. Summer 1998: I’m moseying around Kensington Library, on one of my usual pop-culture trawls, when assistant librarian, Weller-acolyte – and genius researcher Simon Wells calls me over, fizzing with excitement. “You know what this year is, don’t you?” he says. “It’s the 25th anniversary of the making of The Wicker Man.” Now this, of course, is tremendous news. From a freelance film writer’s perspective, it’s a story, a feature, a photo library opportunity – and they don’t come along all that often. Even better, according to Simon, there’s a whole bunch of intrigue attached to this one, concerning missing negatives, which may or may not have erroneously ended up as roadfill in the M3… Fast Forward to January 8th 1999: I’m poring over our Wicker Man double spread in that day’s Guardian newspaper when the telephone rings. It’s someone called Andy Miller, Fourth Estate’s commissioning editor and resident pop-culture guru: would we be interested! ! in writing a book about the movie? Er…yes? The following week brings terrible news: someone else is already writing a book on the same subject for a different publishing house. Never mind lads. Back to the enquiry desk and the subbing stints for you. We are, it must be said, in something close to purgatory. Miller calls back a week later: “Tell you what boys. How about writing an ‘entire’ book on the history of British cult movies, and their locations? The first of its kind…” “Promise?” “Promise.” “No hidden catches?” “Just write it.” And so we did. Nearly three years on, broke and destitute, we’ve finally completed it. Hope you like it. Simply, this book is for fans, by fans. Unlike the glut of film texts, it doesn’t subscribe to any school of film theory – it’s simply passionate about its subject. We think you might be too. Ali Catterall --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
