From the Author

I would like to welcome you sincerely to this newest and revised edition of Your Dog And Your Baby. No other book I have written since has received so much response I have boxes and boxes of letters from women and grandparents all over the world, thanking me for having written this book.
This is nice, because I always knew there was a need for this book. I knew this because I have spent hours on the telephone, trying to re assure pregnant and very distraught women that they don’t have to put the dog down just because there’s a baby on the way it seems there’s always someone ready and willing to dole out this particular piece of bad advice.
Sometimes it was mother in law, sometimes a neighbour, sometimes a midwife or a health visitor with a dog phobia, but in every case, it made the woman in question feel terrible because they loved their dogs and felt in their hearts of hearts that their child would love them, too.
I wrote to many publishers at the time, and they all said the same thing, it’ll never sell, who needs it, no thank you.
Well, the last four editions are sold out, and that’s a good thing because it gave me the opportunity to bring this book up to date and in line with the latest thinking on companion dogs.
It also gave me the opportunity to add another appendix - namely the famous "How You Can Have A Really Good Dog" guide, a training book in its very own right but not for general dog obedience, but for real training for good manners in the home. For about 15 years, I used to visit people in their own homes and help them with their dogs behaviour problems, and this guide is basically the entire experience gleaned during those years with all those thousands of dogs in their own home with their many different types of owners. I highly recommend that you take a good look at that because I am sure you will find at least some things in there that will really, really help you, your whole family and your dog or your dogs live a much, much happier life with a lot less unnecessary negativity all around.
But now, to my very first book ever written - Your Dog And Your Baby.
You could say that I am now a real expert in dog training and behaviour modification. I have studied the subject in depth in theory but that is really nothing much compared with the fact that I have actually been there I’ve brought up two kids with dozens of rescued problem dogs around, and both my boys are absolutely fine, healthy, now 22 and 13 respectively, and without a single tooth mark to show between them!
I’m not saying there haven’t been moments like the day my 3 year old calmly walked into a full blown dog fight between a Doberman and a German Shepherd in the park, telling them they were being "naughty doddies" and they stopped and stared at him in astonishment, as did the horrified owners and I; or the time I found the baby, aged 8 months, inside the indoor kennel, attempting to stuff a 4 week old miniature poodle puppy head first into his mouth.
However, that’s really nothing compared to what they got up without dogs being involved, and I can sincerely and honestly say, everyone always got on splendidly.
I wish you as much fun with your dog/s and your baby/s as I have had over the years with mine.
With all my best wishes to you and lots of love -
S. A. Kent, September 2002

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for would be Mums with a dog., 6 May 1999
By A Customer
This is essential reading for all Mums-to-be and new Mums. It prepares the dog owning family for the arrival of the new baby, teaches how to avoid problems when baby does arrive and how to have a happy baby/dog relationship from day one. It teaches how to solve the problems before they happen by preparing your dog for the birth of your baby.

I am a dog behaviour counsellor and I recommend this book very strongly to all pregnant women with a dog in the family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite basic but would still recommend, 5 Nov 2008
This seemed like the best book on the subject available on Amazon. It's a wee bit amateurish - I suppose you could call the style 'folksie'. But it's got lots of good advice and is not patronising or ridiculous.
I'd recommend you add this to your pregnancy reading list.
