Book Description

2 Dec 2004 0415341558 978-0415341554 2

Following the successful first edition, this revised and updated book continues to provide students with a detailed guide to the planning and procedures they must consider when preparing dissertations in geography, environmental science and geology.

Written by well-respected authors in the field, it takes new sources, improved technology in production of the dissertation, and changes in teaching style into account. Guiding the reader through each stage in the process, it deals with many of the common concerns and issues involved in dissertation writing, ranging from deciding which topic to work on, through research design and data collection, to handing in the final bound volume. With an extended consideration of different types of data (qualitative, quantitative and spatial) and a broad reflection on different approaches to problem solving, this useful text suggests practical ways of dealing with the tasks involved, locates the common pitfalls associated with each, and helps readers write the best dissertation possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 9 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book having looked at other dissertation guides and found them to be unsatisfactory for my degree subject (geology). This book came recommended by a friend and has proven to be invaluable and easy to read. The book guides you through your dissertation, from considering your aims, conducting the research, and then writing-up, which is useful when trying to plan the timetable for each stage. If you're doing a physical geography or other investigative science subject then get this book!

Edit: I got a 1st in my dissertation and a 1st in my degree; this book was instrumental in helping me achieve this and I truly believe my dissertation wouldn't have been scored so highly without it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok 24 Dec 2009

This is a good guide book, and ofcourse it is helpful but, unlike the previous reviews, I found it a bit too much and other dissertation guide books, not specifically for geography and related disciplines, have helped me much more as they were more direct to the point. If you buy this you won't be disappointed, but you Dont have to buy this in particular as you might find the help you need elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful! 12 Feb 2008

This book is a very easy read and lays out the steps that you need to take to write any kind of big research paper. Because this stuff is usually kind of dry, the authors use humor to help get their points across. I would highly recommend this to anyone that has to write a thesis; it is a good reference book and the whole thing can be read very quickly.
