2.0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal and overhyped 14 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
To read the back cover of this, you'd think that the author had just discovered the secret of the universe. In reality, she picks one of the most well known ways to change which is -wait for it!-to change your emotions! From all the great teachings down the ages this is a common theme. In more recent times Carl Jung,Psychosynthesis and NLP all use this as a means of seeing the world in a different light. All she has done is write about this, complete with what is supposedly an original idea of drawing a light switch to show how when you feel stuck in a negative emotion, just switch to a more positive one.By far the most irritating feature is the unashamed nepotism.Apparently,Bob Proctor was responsible for several of the author's"epiphanies" so guess who writes a rave review? yes- Bob Proctor.Same with Caroline Myss and other self-help authors. This is now a standard way of getting something published-have a huge marketng machine which relies on the author's friends reviewing the book, writing recommendations and forewords. What it actually is is sleight of hand , duping the public by subliminal positive association making them pre-disposed to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 2 May 2007
By Aaron
Negative emotions are our prison and this book is like a key to unlock your emotional cell door. To know isn't enough, you need deeper understanding than that at the level of replacing negative emotions with positive ones and Peggy offers a way to do this.

In the first part, Peggy explains the power of emotions - both positive and negative. In the second part, we get into understanding the relationship between negative and positive emotions. In part three she discusses the concept of "Destiny Switch" and she provides helpful solutions to make the switch in our emotions. In the final part, she helps to put it all together with Destiny Planner - a helpful tool to plan your emotional transformation.

"The Destiny Switch" is a great book for anyone wanting to turn negative emotions into positive ones. A great companion book "Nexus: A Neo Novel" covers the emotional transformation of Logan Andrews from depression and despair to joy and hope. It's really helpful to journey with Logan and experience his transformation and apply lessons learned in "Nexus" to your own life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite helpful 2 Sep 2007
By Lisa Maynard VINE VOICE
I have re-written my review after realising that some of it has been helpful. I think that some of the first half of the book is very simplistic and a bit tired, and I couldn't take it in properly. Having now thought about and used some of the techniques featured, I have realised that it is worthwhile reading this and adding it to your current practises in using the Law of Attraction. I do not recommend coming to this book as a newcomer though - start with The Secret first!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Could (Radically) Change Your Life 1 Jun 2007
By Janet Boyer - Published on
"When you're on the road to your destiny, you can sense it. Don't talk yourself out of doing what you're meant to do just because you feel scared for some reason or don't know what turn to make next. It may take a while for your next opportunity to reveal itself. You're never wasting time as long as you're keeping your eyes and your heart open to possibilities for achieving your destiny. You might be learning something crucial to what you'll do in the future." - From the book

Let me begin by saying that reading Your Destiny Switch was thrilling and satisfying on many levels. I found myself cheering and grinning while I read--thankful that someone has FINALLY melded common sense, compassion and the Law of Attraction into a practical, encouraging manual on making the most out of life.

It has taken me YEARS of experimentation using wisdom gleaned from studying sacred texts and reading self-help/psychology books to undo destructive thought patterns that begat emotional chaos and confusion. Written in an engaging, lucid style, Peggy McColl explains what I found to be true via trial and error in her book Your Destiny Switch. (How I wish I had this book a decade ago!)

Now, I will tell you that I was skeptical at first, especially with the Hay House hype surrounding this book. ("Not another shallow Hay House dud ala Dyer", I groaned.) But despite the tacky publicity blitz surrounding Your Destiny Switch, I can honestly say that this book delivers in terms of showing readers how to master key emotions and use them to live a life of peace, joy and abundance.

Now, when I say "abundance", I'm not talking about the narcissistic money grabbing shtick often present in Law of Attraction products (can you say "The Secret"?). And, neither is Peggy McColl. No, what Your Destiny Switch offers is a brilliantly simple model for observing destructive emotions, deciding to feel better and switching to feelings that are more positive and productive for EVERYONE.

Ms. McColl discusses "false positive" feelings, differentiating them from authentic positive emotions. In other words, unlike some authors (e.g. Lynn Grabhorn), she doesn't tell you to deny, ignore, or judge negative feelings while forcing "happiness", but rather encourages readers to approach troubling emotions with curiosity and gentleness--embracing the valuable lessons they can impart.

I was surprised (and impressed) that Your Destiny Switch actually addressed--quite specifically--some of the misgivings I've had about some New Thought/LofA teachings. For example, how can one "turn up the volume" on a particular emotion when he/she has never experienced it? Well, Ms. McColl addresses this with Switching Strategy #12.

And what about compassion for those in difficult circumstances--or dealing with challenging, negative individuals? Rather than the arrogant posturing of some authors (e.g. Rhonda Byrne), who encourage readers to avoid or ignore such people (after all, they're not vibrating in alignment with my fabulous, self indulgent needs!) Ms. McColl provides practical, compassionate tools for meeting people right where they are--and imbuing such situations with kindness, clarity and helpful solutions. (Of course, whether such individuals accept it is up to them. Some people get huge energetic payoffs for playing the victim.)

Your Destiny Switch likens emotional states to dimmer panels, which can either increase or decrease light in a room. Ms. McColl describes how we can easily assess our emotional states using this model, and how we can then decide to switch into more empowering emotional states--and how they may be different for each person and vary according to situation. For example, if you want to start a new business, you may ramp up enthusiasm and curiosity, but if you're seeking peace and harmony, you'd ramp up a different set of feelings.

This book also shows readers how to re-write and edit the painful "movies" of memories, cultivate faith in Divine timing, release attachments, re-cast flaws as strengths, create a mission statement, use powerful switching strategies and "illuminators" for living your destiny and how to stay true to your OWN unique, self-determined values.

I've highlighted quite a few passages in Your Destiny Switch and I'd like to share some of these valuable nuggets with you:

* "The more we feel that things `have' to go the way we want them to, the more attached we are to how our lives are `supposed' to work out, and the more suffering we create for ourselves. On the other hand, the less attached we are, the less we suffer."

* "When you raise the volume on your sense of worthiness, you don't feel a constant need to have others validate you. You experience a state of grace and are above any mean-spirited criticism. You don't commit acts of violence against yourself, either by saying cruel things to yourself or letting others do so."

* "I know that I can choose to create a beautiful melody with my vibration, or I can screech out a horrifying sound. I conduct the symphony, and I control my Destiny Switch."

* "Whatever your gifts or talents are, accept and cultivate them. Don't dwell on the characteristics you don't have...None of us can be terrifically talented at everything."

* "I don't believe that people won't or can't change...Don't think for a minute that who you are is set in stone."

* "...if you continue to be who you've always been, you'll keep getting what you've always gotten. To change what you receive, you need to transform your identity."

If you're ready for a change and seek to hook up with the flow of abundance, discover personal meaning and dare to live the life of your dreams, I highly recommend Your Destiny Switch to show you the way. It's rare that I get this excited about a book, but the solid information, insightful anecdotes and sensible instructions could literally change thousands--perhaps millions--of lives. I know that my life has changed by applying the principles in this book--and so can yours.

2.0 out of 5 stars Solid, but not groundbreaking 2 May 2007
By BookLover - Published on
Initially, this review focused on my issues with Hay House promotional tactics and the numerous "professional" reviews that, I thought, went way overboard in lauding the contributions of this book. In fairness to the author however, I did review her book more closely and I'm rewriting my review to reflect that. However in a nutshell, I would say to Hay House and others helping to promote new books: Please review your promotional strategies. We, who love your work and mission, view some of the strategies as promotional fluff at best and deception at worst. They are actually turning off some of your customer base, so please rethink how to promote and market your books to the spiritually inclined and attuned audience you are targeting. You can also read the comments responding to the original review for more on this.

As for Peggy McColl's book, I read through it quickly and here's my thinking. The book is a fine treatment of the role emotions play in our lives. I tried to revise my review to three stars but was unable to do so. This book would be helpful for those who have not read widely on this topic. However, if you've read any of the Hicks books (particularly Ask and It is Given or Deliberate Creation) or "Excuse me your life is waiting" by Lynn Grabhorn, or any other book that talks about how important it is to be in emotional alignment with the experiences you want to bring into your life, I fear this book will be a bit redundant. However, I do think the book is better written then the Grabhorn book so it might be of value to those who weren't in sync with Grabhorn's writing style.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware... can anyone say CONFLICT OF INTEREST?? 2 May 2007
By objective reviewer - Published on
Over half of the reviews posted as of today were written by people being promoted by the sale of this book!! Reviewers such as Randy Gilbert, Warren Whitlock, Teresa Bolen, Bob Burg, Barbara Rose, and Eldon Taylor are all part of a promotion Hay House (the publisher) is running! Two others shamelessly plugged their own books as part of their reviews and another guy actually works for the author!!

Do any of you realize that those of us who utilize the Amazon review system depend on it to make our buying choices based on its OBJECTIVITY?? Especially books related to Self-Help and Personal Growth/Development! C'mon! It's not supposed to be whoever has the most contacts willing to sell themselves out wins! We are here searching for advice, hoping to find guidance from real people with real life experience and opinions to share.

Peggy McColl's book may very well be as good as they all say. Who knows? But after coming here looking for help to try and make a decision about it and discovering example after example of blatant self-promotion instead, I for one am certainly no longer willing to make the leap of faith necessary to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Secret to Achieving Your Dreams (and a Real Switch) 30 April 2007
By Randy Gilbert aka DrProactive - Published on
In my opinion, Peggy McColl has nailed this most difficult subject. She takes a very proactive approach to helping us understand our inner thoughts and feelings and how to exercise control so we can create our ideal life.

This book is a welcome "switch" from the norm and Peggy delivers on the promises of the subtitle, "Master Your Key Emotions, and Attract the Life of Your Dreams."

The switch she is talking about is not an "on-off" switch, but more of a "dimmer" switch that you find over a dining room table. You control the brightness and turn it up at will.

Since most people read non-fiction books for the benefit they bring, I've identified a few specific points that might help you.

Here are a couple of my favorite nuggets of wisdom Peggy shares in her book:

** You cannot escape from a prison unless you know you are in one. ** Emotions are tricky, because they can trap you and you might not even know it. Admitting you have some difficult emotions and then managing them will unlock the door.

** Knowledge alone is not enough. ** You must supplement your emotions with practical application. You can turn up you success volume by turning up your positive emotions.

** To have it all, you have to be willing to give it all up. ** You can create any level of success, but you can't be attached to the outcome. Positive emotions will bring you what you desire, but it has to come in its own way.

I interviewed this author on Inside Success Radio for three reasons: 1) I believe that speaking with an author is the best way to know a book is genuine, 2) it gives the author an opportunity to summarize the main points, which creates a type of "Readers Digest" version of the book, and 3) during an interview you often get additional "golden nuggets" that aren't found in the book.

During the radio interview I asked Peggy to share with everyone what the Inside Success Secret is to attract the life of your dreams, and this is what she said:

"I think it's important to remember that our emotions are playing this key role in our life and that as much as we can get them, as we might call it, under control, that there will be times in our life where we're thrown a curve ball or we're going to experience a challenge that we did not expect. For that reason and for having the experience myself, chapter four of the entire book Your Destiny Switch is called Getting Back on Track.

It starts with a chapter of Using Your Destiny Switch during challenging times, because there will be challenging times. I remember watching a video by Lou Holtz many years ago. Lou Holtz said in the video if you don't have adversity hitting you right now; get ready because it's coming."

### end quote ###

I usually try to identify the type person who might NOT enjoy reading this book (and that wasn't easy for this book.)

This book is probably not for the person who thinks talking about emotions is for just a few hyper-emotional people. Or, who feels that success only comes by way of "trying a little harder." Since your reading this review, that probably isn't you.

The rating I give books is based on a combination of how much I believe a proactive person might enjoy reading them and how much they might help you to be a more proactive person.

This book easily earns 5 stars...and I recommend it to you with no reservation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book OK, Hay House marketing ta turnoff! Buy From Amazon 5 May 2007
By lightcondor - Published on
I agree with another reviewer who finds fault with Hay House and their flaky, fluffy cross-marketing. I have lost a little respect for the authors who are paricipating- some who are former teachers of mine. I have gotten the same fluffy letter from multiple mailing lists- each one signed by a different auther in the Hay House Corral.

I am just going to buy the book from Amazon and save the annoyance! Hay House, change your tactics! have some respect for your customer's intelligence!
