Book Description

3 April 1997 0711211140 978-0711211148 New edition
This is a guide for parents to the challenging process of helping their children develop. It sets out all that parents need to know about the way a child develops – physically, mentally and emotionally – from birth, through infancy and childhood, to the crucial period of adolescence. While the main narrative focuses on the grand patterns of development, separate boxed sections deal with key subjects, for example, what to do about bullying or how to help a shy child make friends. This revised edition includes up-to-date growth charts based on the latest surveys of children and young people up to the age of 18.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really useful resource 12 April 2002
A helpful, extensive and well-written guide to child development. Attractively illustrated with sensitive and often charming photography. I would recommend this book to any parent or parent-to-be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 1 Feb 2009
I bought this book to use during my Psychology Degree, as i wish to specialise in Child Development. This book has references to important theorists such as Piaget and Ainsworth and Bell who made a significant contribution to the theory of Child Development. Although this book is not wholly psychology based, it uses a common sense approach to consider why children might behave in the way that they do, and includes some scientific information with regard to brain structure and a child's sight and perception. It is divided into chapters, each focusing on a specific age group. My daughter is currently 15 months old and so the section relevant to her, i have read. However, i have also read the previous and following chapters up until 3 years of age, as these also contain useful information in terms of what to expect and why.

I am only half way through the book at the moment, as it continues through to the teenage years of 18. No doubt i will read it all and then revisit in when my daughter is in my opinion moving towards the next stage. This book would be interesting for anyone to read, regardless of whether you have an interest in psychology or not, and I would highly recommend it.
