Book Description

13 Feb 2006
The menopause is one of life's certainties - what's less certain these days is how we might choose to approach it when it arrives. Until recently, HRT seemed to be the universal panacea. Now newer scientific evidence has begun to cast doubt on its efficacy and even its safety, and women everywhere are starting to rethink their options. But with a flood of conflicting messages from doctors and the media, trying to work out what the alternatives are, and what might be best for us is a headache in itself.

Now this comprehensive and reassuring guide gives the answers. Top gynaecologist Michael Dooley and leading health journalist Sarah Stacey offer a unique integrated approach, combining lifestyle measures with medical and/or complementary therapies in a plan that's individually right for you. Providing the most up-to-date research on HRT and alternative therapies, they steer a clear and unbiased course through the research findings and opinions, and show you how to make an informed decision on the pathway that best suits you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An answer to everything! 5 May 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I ordered this book yesterday and couldn't wait for it to arrive. Boy, was I not disappointed! Everything I wanted to know and more - I've only had it for 2 hours and I can't put it down! I wanted to know absolutely everything about what was happening to my body, how to cope with the changes and how to stay healthy and happy during this new phase in my life. My doctor was quite happy to pat me on the head and say "Keep taking the tablets and try to stay calm". Well, I wanted answers and this book had all the answers ... and more. I feel so much better for having read just a small bit of it - the best purchase I've made in a long time.

This book is brilliant. It is the best & most informative book I have read about the menopause.

It has an easy to read format that gives you all the information you need to be able to make informed decisions about how to deal with and manage the menopause successfully.

It covers everything from what is happening to your body and how to treat the symptoms, whether it is with HRT or alternative therapies, to eating healthy & exercise to the best ways to look after your skin, hair, & nails.

This books positive approach shows you, that there is life after the menopause, and you can look good & feel great about yourself.

By H. Boyd
Format:Paperback
Praise be! At last there is a book that makes you feel that going through the menopause isn't equivalent to contracting leprosy. No doom and gloom and crone-dom here, but really sensible, well-researched information and advice about every aspect of menopause and women's health generally.
You'll all love it, whether you're an alternative medicine fan or not. They don't diss HRT, but they do explain the facts in fantastic detail, with who should and shouldn't etc and what you can do instead for the dreaded hot flushes.
What I loved was the comforting notion that women can still look gorgeous after they've menopaused. They include all kinds of advice, from healthy eating, vitamins, exercise - great yoga poses - skincare, makeup and contraception for the post-menopausal woman.
Basically everything you need to know about how to survive for another 50 years without turning into an old bag.
If you are anywhere near your menopause I'd buy this book now. It's the ony one you'll ever need.

5.0 out of 5 stars So it's not all in my head! 16 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
On a visit to my sister this weekend, I was telling her how I thought I was suffering peri-menopausal symptoms but wasn't sure that it wasn't just all in my head, (me being a person who panics at the drop of a hat). She gave me this book to borrow, wow! what a piece of kit.... Couldn't put it down, described everything in detail, the hows and whys and what to try, I'm buying my own book now! It will be so much easier to cope knowing what's happening and that it won't last forever. This is a recommended read for every woman.

While suddenly entering the menopause and having no information on what to expect and getting conflicting advice from doctors, I found this book full of information and lots of choices so I now feel better informed on which questions I need to ask. It has also made the whole process feel more "natural".

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading. 26 May 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is excellent and I suggest you read it if you are approaching or experiencing your menapause. It was recommended to me by my Dr so as to research all the other possibilities before 'HRT'. I found it extremely useful, so glad that I read it and would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars To HRT or not to HRT? 31 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book helps you answer this question by discussing the pros and cons of HRT, as well as natural alternatives, in recognition of the fact that every woman is different - what suits one may not suit another. All-in-all it offers some great advice to help you stay healthy, positive and glamorous during and after the menopause.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your change. Your choice 25 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This book really does let you make the choice of how to cope with the problems of going through the change. It is also very easy to read and understand. It explains that there is alternatives to HRT if you want or need them. I found it handy as these things where never talked about in my family and really didn't understand what symptoms I would have and how to cope with them. Like many women I can not have HRT and most doctors do not have time to explain all the alternatives.
