Loose ends! 17 May 2012
By Clare M
Format:Paperback
This book was compelling and extremely atmospheric. I came to care deeply about the fate of the main characters, and sat up much later than usual one night to finish the book & find out their fate.
It was therefore extremely frustrating to find that the end was so inconclusive. Was I missing something? Had Simone had some sort of a breakdown, or had Michael really survived? His survival seemed so very unbelieveable due to the vividly described events leading up to his supposed demise! There was too much left for the reader to fill in for themselves.
I didn't expect a fairytale ending - the tone of the story was much too sinister for that, however, too many questions were left unanswered.
Despite the excellent portrayal of characters, relationships and atmospheric descriptions, the resultant frustration and disappointment at the end has put me off reading any more of Helen Dunmore's books.

The number of printing mistakes made it quite difficult to read this novel. The errors appeared to get worse as one read on!

Too many misprints 14 May 2011
By Alla Kolganova - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This version of the book has too many misprints, which is very distracting
. In hindsight I would have preferred the printed version
