Book Description

10 May 2007

Finding out what to expect during each week of pregnancy is easy; the shops are heaving with informative guides. Yet when the baby finally arrives and you are left to face the weeks of unpredictability and worry that a newborn baby brings, there are no week-by-week baby manuals to offer the advice, information and reassurance you need.

Your Baby Week By Week is the guide you've been crying out for. Each chapter covers just one week of a baby's development, and, ideal for tired and anxious parents, the week is divided into sections so that you can quickly and easily skim the chapter and find the information you're looking for. It covers the basics - sleep, feeding, crying, washing, play and development - as well as being packed full of vital information and handy tips for checking a baby's progress, including:

- which vaccinations he needs and when

- how much milk/feeds he needs

- planning ahead

- specific problems you may encounter, such as colic, and how to deal with them

Clearly laid out and written by two experienced mothers - one a paediatrician, the other the Daily Mirror's health editor, this is a reassuring and practical guide to help you through the crucial first six months of parenthood.

"

Your Baby Week By Week is a brilliant handbook for new mums. Small babies take up lots of time, particularly in the first six months, so the bite-sized approach to topics such as crying, feeding, sleeping and weaning is perfect for helping mums through all the challenges of the early days and inspiring them to feel confident.

" (Elaine Griffiths, Editor Prima Baby )

"a really useful book to read a few weeks before your baby arrives" (Pregnancy and Birth )

"This book is what every mum has been waiting for - the week-by-week format makes it all so simple" (Amber Morales Daily Mirror )

"This is a lifesaver for every new mum" (Amanda Bradbury Grazia )

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice of experience 3 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had numerous recommendations from friends to buy this or that baby book that would have the wee one in a regimented routine in no time. I wasn't comfortable with the thought of being told what to do - how do you then handle things if the baby has its own ideas? As my Mum pointed out, the baby won't have read the book....

The great thing about this book is that it tells you what to expect rather than what to do, and is filled with advice rather than instructions. I found it very reassuring and also uncannily accurate so far (my son is 12 weeks old). I also found it helpful to read ahead and feel confident that things would get easier (which they have). It's comprehensive but not daunting, and very easy to read. My husband and I refer to it all the time and his parents even bought a copy they were so impressed.

I would have been lost without the calm voice of reason and experience that this book provided in the first weeks of my son's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of books for first-time parents 28 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bumped into Gina Ford Contented baby book when I was 6 months pregnant and after that read several other books. Now my baby being 11 weeks, I thought I could share my experience and thoughts of several books I have read, so will copy/paste into the sections for those other books as well.

First of all, all babies are really different, so there is no 1 single routine/book that will suit everybody, plus the most important thing it needs to suit the parents. And also parents can make up their own routines to suit their way of life without constantly checking against what suits others. I, obviously, only have experience of my one baby, so surely not all of it will apply to all other babies...

Gina Ford "The New Contented Little Baby Book: The Secret to Calm and Confident Parenting"

I am generally a very organised person and when I read Gina Ford and even heard negative feedback I was extremely positive and thought of implementing the system from the second week (first two to go with the flow). However, not only very quickly I understood that my baby would not follow any of those schedules but also that I did NOT WANT those schedules any more. I only felt stressed every time I tried to follow some advice to put Ada into a routine and nothing worked, so I eventually (around week 5-6) said to myself that I would completely drop all of that as I am a happier person without them, plus my baby seems to be getting into her own pattern by herself. Daddy fully supported both decisions every time and we both agreed that dropping would be better.

By week 8 my little one (LO) started sleeping 6-7 hours straight after her bath, then would wake up for a feed, eat 8-15 minutes and then would get back to sleep for another 4 hours making it a manageable night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for first time Mums 14 Sep 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought about 10 baby books! but this one was by far the best. Each chapter is based on each week of your little one's life up to 6 months and covers what you should expect about then for feeding, nappy contents, sleep and other general good tips. As a very new mum I did not have a clue, this book was such a good help. I'd definately recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book 10 July 2007
Format:Paperback
A friend gave me this book just after I had my now 8 week old daughter. As described, it offers just the right amount of information about all the right issues at the right times. I've found it reassuring and a sensible guide with which you can feel your way rather than an inflexible regime. I refer to it frequently and am amazed at how true some of the things are (armpit cheese being one of them!).

I would advise reading ahead (I wish I'd had it during the latter stages of pregnancy when I had a little more time on my hands!) as there are a few things that I caught up with and wished I'd known were coming up. It's also quite good for blokes who tend to have shorter attention spans with pregnancy and baby books according to a friend who has also bought a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab guide for new mums 12 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
After reading lots of different babycare books this book is a real breath of fresh air. As a new mum this guide has been really helpful. It offers information in bitesize chunks, covering all the issues you could expect during that week of your baby's life for the first 2 years of their life. It is non-judgemental and discusses all the things you might be considering from routines to dummies, listing the pros and cons so you can make your own considered judgement. It's great to be able to look ahead to the weeks to come so you have an idea of what to expect - and as the mum of a 3 week old, being able to identify a growth spurt was a real help! I would recommend this to anyone with a new baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite baby book 5 Mar 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a great book for getting you through the first 6 months with your baby. It guides and helps rather than shouts and tells and the style is wonderful for easing you through. This is my first baby and I ordered this book quite late after being disappointed with the ones I had - I wish I'd had this one from the start. So nice not to be lectured on how you must do everything, but rather receive some down-to-earth advice instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good week by week reference! 30 Oct 2012
Format:Paperback
I borrowed this book from a friend with my first child and found it so useful I bought my own copy the second time! It's definitely a reference book, so I've never used every piece of advice, but it reminds about things like growth spurts etc. I like reading the chapter each week, it makes it manageable and a perfect read whilst feeding! The weekly section about what is happening to mum is great and really relevant. The only thing that confuses me is that the first chapter after baby is born, is called week 0, so I get mixed up as to which week I'm on later on!
