Leave school to pursue the dream of making it in the music industry? For talented rapper Jay, it's a no-brainer. But his producer and best friend Yemi has just aced his exams, got a place at college and a future. Jay is looking at a career fixing boilers with his dad. A local ‘Open Mic' competition gives Jay the chance to test his friend's commitment to making music. Is it going to be Yemi's life, or just a hobby? Fresh, funny and full of swagger, Youngers is a show about growing up surrounded by music.

My 13 year old son caught some of this series on E4 and loved it, hence the 5 star rating. As the mother of a younger (but fairly mature) teenage boy I wanted to see the content so I insisted on watching this with him when the DVD arrived. There were a few moments when I held my breath but on the whole it is an excellent and realistic portrayal of young people's lives and urban culture today. The main characters are 16 year olds who have just taken their GCSEs. Yemi and Jay are teenage friends growing up on a high rise South London council estate. Both their parents are on their own for one reason or another and money is tight in both households. Their respective parents are loving and provide stability but struggle to balance working and parenting in difficult circumstances. Yemi and Jay must both fend for themselves a lot of the time. Yemi is a grade A student and secures a place at a prestigious local grammar school 6th form. Jay flunks his exams and must join his dad in his boiler repair business. Their friendship is forged in their love of urban music and both aspire to take it to the next level, joined by Davina, another bright student and talented singer from a more affluent background. This series charts that journey, and their personal journeys as they develop into young adults trying to work out who they are, what they really want and how to form and negotiate relationships. As the series develops these relationships are tested and threaten the future of the 'Youngers' as a musical entity. The series is realistic, never patronises its young audience and in my opinion its content is OK for the 13+ age group who will love its realism, its finger firmly on the pulse of urban youth culture.Read more ›
