Book Description

April 2009 0714849812 978-0714849812
"Younger than Jesus: The Artists Directory" is the product of some of the most wide-ranging research in the field of contemporary art in years: the first 'Younger than Jesus' triennial at the New Museum. Working with a team of 200 'insiders' (curators, writers, teachers, critics, bloggers and artists) scattered across the globe, curators Massimiliano Gioni , Lauren Cornell and Laura Hoptman have selected the 500 best international artists under the age of 33, from which they will curate the exhibition component of the triennial in spring 2009. While most generational exhibitions are retrospective, this one will be predictive, anticipating the future and revealing upcoming trends. "Younger than Jesus: The Artists Directory" will therefore be an unparalleled resource for curators, collectors, dealers and critics. By serving as a handbook to currrent artistic innovation, it will also appeal to artists, designers and anyone curious about the latest developments in visual culture.

Review

'Arguably the hottest catalogue of the season ... It is already rumoured to have become the must-have directory for curators' Carla Yarish, Art World, June 2009 'One ought to be impressed by the remarkable endurance of the yellow pages in the age of cell phones and Google. The massive artist directory published for the New Museum's "Younger Than Jesus" Triennial is rather reassuring in this sense. ... it is a true relief to find once again that printed matter actually matters. The book as a medium, and as an attractive object, is still what seems to guarantee [...] that what it contains won't get lost in the stream of cultural production. ... a very cheap, very cute encyclopedia of the very latest visual artists' Stefano Cernuschi, Mousse, September 2009

3.0 out of 5 stars Clever, clever, but poor execution of catalog 11 July 2011
By S. Koterbay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I really like the idea: gather together recommendations from critics and curators from around the world of artists younger than a certain age, marking their rise into the art world. And, while not every artist included is someone I think is that good, nevertheless many are, and I've gone from this book to other sources to learn about them, and to consider including them in my classes. Yet, with just four pages of introductory text, with so little information about each artist, and with a book printed on the same quality of paper as a telephone directory (yes, that's clever, and it kept the book price down, but it still feels very cheap), this quickly became a book that is something I've flipped through but won't use again. In short, it's not a directory as a reference source but more of a huge, extensive, and superficial listing of names as suggestions, many of whom will be forgotten about in the near future simply given the structure of the art world and not through any lack of talent or merit.
