Product Description

CD Description

· This first-ever official reissue of the sole album, outside Japan, by the Japanese fuzz drenched band The Dynamites follows RPM International's successful reissue of The Mops' Psychedelic Sounds In Japan.

· Released originally in Japan in April 1968, The Dynamites' Young Sound R&B was, typically for a Japanese album of the period, bulked out with covers of the hits of the day. For us today however their musical translation of such covers is irresistible. For example Judy In Disguise is suffused with over the top fuzz guitar, with a compelling mangling of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy are real draws .

· Naturally The Dynamites shine best on their own songs. Nobosecha Ikenai is a swinging Stones-a-like and Manatsu No Yoru No Dobutsuen is deranged fuzz-damaged garage punk where they sing about "crazy samba nights".

· This reissue of the essential Young Sound R&B is enhanced by the addition of all The Dynamites' non-album JVC singles.

· When, in his book `Japrocksampler', Julian Cope "said that "The Dynamites had been considered outrageous in 1967 for their Blue Cheer version of Summertime Blues", he nailed the sonic frenzy The Dynamites' guitars captured at their wildest. Sadly they did not record their take of Summertime Blues, but their classic single Tunnel To Heaven is one of the wildest, most fuzz-drenched, Japanese records from the `60s. This sums up the reasons why everyone should have The Dynamites Young Sound R&B in their collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Young Sound R&B - The Dynamites 20 Oct 2011

As far as I know 'Young Sound R&B' collects the entire output of The Dynamites. The only other release that I am aware of is 'Live At The Go Go ACB 1969'. Their debut single,'Tomeru Tengoku' & b-side 'Koiwa Mou Takasan' are included twice as both titles were re-recorded for inclusion on 'Young Sound R&B'.

Like all the bands of Japan's Group Sound scene, The Dynamites supplemented their self-penned Japanese language compositions with a batch of competent English language covers. Excepting their fuzz drenched take on Jon Fred & His Playband's hit 'Judy In Disguise', covers like 'Last Train To Clarksville' (The Monkees) & (the album's low)'Masasachusetts' (Bee Gees) are notable only for Segawa Hiroshi's mangling of the English lyrics.

Of their originals, both 'Tomeru Tengoku' & 'Manatsuno Yoruno Dobutsuen' are the real killers, featuring screams, shrieks, even bird calls, not forgetting The Dynamites's weapon of choice: Fujio Yamaguchi's buzzing fuzz guitar. 'Koiwa Mou Takasan', which purloins the Paint It Black intro, is almost up there, at least in the fuzz department. Best track for me is the 'Otonano Senso', combining ornate strings with Yamaguchi's nagging fuzz. The final track, and presumably their final release, 'Yumedemo Lisa' is a brass fuelled slab of commercial pop.

It's not an essential release for a 60s fan, hence the 3 star review, but it's a welcome curio for anyone wanting to hear the influence of The Beatles and their ilk on the rest of the world.
