5.0 out of 5 stars What the upcomiing young British seaman read in 1819, 10 Mar 2003
By A Customer
"The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor: or a Key to the leading of Rigging and to Practical Seamanship" by Darcy Lever was widely used among young 19th-century officers in the Royal Navy. This is one of several Dover reprints of classic sea faring reference works that will be of special interest to fans of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, especially now that the first film based on the novels, "Master and Commander" with Russell Crowe will be coming out this year. The same thing would apply to C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower stories. This 1819 edition of "The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor" is the closest thing I have come across so far to what the young Mr. Hornblower would have been reading when he was learning the ropes on the "Indy." This volume offers concise definitions of key terms, illustrations detailing the principles of rigging, and principles of seamanship from tacking and use of a compass to splicing ropes and making sails. Consequently it is perfect for the nautical novice who has been having vicarious experiences through these great sea-faring yarns. This is a fascinating and informative look at naval history.

4.0 out of 5 stars A review by a modern day square-rig sailor, 22 Feb 2005
By A Customer
A Young Sea Officers Sheet Anchor is a good glimpse into the mind and practices of seamanship on square riggers in the age of sail but beware; it is a difficult read. I realise that many people read Darcy Lever as a companion to modern day novels about the days of sail but I approached it from a practical point of view. As such I found it of limited value. There are things to be learned from this book but better manuals exist written in more modern times and using modern language. This is a good book for scholars and a good reference for the experienced seaman but don't expect to learn how to sail square-rig by reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 27 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This book is a must have for the onboard library of all boaters interested in traditional rigging. And for those of us out there working on the few remaining tallships, this book is a Godsend. An excellent reference.
