4.0 out of 5 stars It's Funny What will Stand The Test of Time 21 May 2009
By arronax
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was recommend to me by someone when we discussing "the essential books for a Gentleman's Library".

This is a reprint of the 3rd Edition, the book originally written in 1833.
Divided into various chapters topics include; business, amusements and indulgences, socializing with women, marriage and criminal behaviour.

Writing from an American point of view the author is greatly inspired by his faith; although I think many of his point are relevant regardless of an individual's spiritual beliefs.

Although some aspects of the book seem dated, such as describing daily whole body washing as "extreme", much of the information is surprisingly relevant for today and the book has certainly given me some food for
thought.

In conclusion, an interesting and fun read that's easy to dip into.
Just don't take it too seriously!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stiff Rectitude to Us; Warm and Fuzzy to 1836. 23 May 2010
By J. P. Fisher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This reviewer is not here going into detail, citings and/or rhetorical devices. Short and sweet.

Mr. Alcott's work is from the heart and it is inspired by the spirit of community improvement, which is one of the fundamental prinicples he proposes ought to be included in an American male's psyche as a key motivator.

That principle still has merit, as do many of the others he advances. On the very first page of Chapter One, he defines every man's purpose in life: "to be of the greatest possible usefulness." No problem.

Those guys seem always to have been producing something. They had no TV, no iPad, Kindle, smart phone, Google search, Bing (just for comparison.) But there were, as always, distractions. Handle them.

If you are conversant with contemporary thought and practice in parenting and aware of some developmental psychology - not that the reviewer so purports - as "MyCousin Vinnie" would say, "it holds water." (Granted, Alcott's era is nothing even close to recognizably touchy-feel-y, but he loves youth and says that kids playing is an absolute must- after the work is done, of course.)

Between what Alcott reports and what the informed reader already knows of boy character building, virtually all of the history of traditional American values is within grasp.

Keep in mind that not many people were eligible to vote then. Women CEO's could be counted on the fingers of no hands. Because of those anachronisms and more, I'd bet some unfortunates today will find the book laughable, as they judge Alcott by 2010 sensibilities. That's often a mistake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing 29 Dec 2012

You will not find any books like this in the self-help section at your local book store. Books like this one may even be located in the fiction section, or religious section. However this book is neither fictitious or downright religious. It is indeed a self-help book, but not one that caters to the weaknesses of humanity like many of the self-help books we find today. It is filled with practical wisdom, and helpful insights, none of which are seemingly impossible. It has small practical insights, that if adhered to can, and eventually will, radically alter someones life. I highly recommend this book because anyone can follow through on the wisdom contained within it, much more they could with modern self-help books. While there is some advise that is outdated, the wisdom remains the same, and it should not be overlooked.
