Product Description

Jim Parks starred for Sussex CCC between 1949 and 1972. As one of the first great wicketkeeper-batsmen he played 46 times for England in a career that earned him widespread respect throughout the game of cricket. Jim was an exciting player who would empty the bar like a Botham or a Flintoff, his style making him an ideal one-day batsman; a fearsome partnership of Parks and Ted Dexter fired Sussex to Gillette Cup success in the first two seasons of the competition. In this official and fully authorised biography, Derek Watts gives the true story behind the highs and lows of Jim's career, from the cup successes and England appearances to the problems that saw him resign the Sussex captaincy in 1968 and then leave the club for Somerset in 1972. Jim returned to the county of his birth in the 1990s, accepting the club's offer of a life membership. He is currently President of Sussex CCC, as he was during their Championship campaign of 2003, so he remains a well-known and extremely popular figure on the South Coast.

About the Author

Derek Watts has been a Sussex supporter since the 1950s and has worked closely with Jim Parks himself in compiling the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jim Parks - Gentleman Cricketer, 9 Nov 2010
By
J. HOLMES (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Young Jim: The Jim Parks Story (100 Greats S.) (Hardcover)
In the 1960s my cricket-mad father would take the whole family on holiday to coincide with the various cricket festivals (as a result of which my 94 year old mother is probably the only woman in the UK who is fully conversant with the LBW laws!).

My brother and I had 2 favourite cricketers then; Ken Barrington and Jim Parks. They were both top class international sportsmen, but without the airs and graces that many others had. As a result, they were happy to sign autographs and chat with young fans, which was a great thrill to we youngsters.

I ran into Jim Parks once or twice in his later life, as a brewery representative, and he was as polite and charming as ever.

This is a thoroughly entertaining biography, which I enjoyed immensely.

However, it is not just a biography, but also a piece of living sports history, about the days when cricket (particularly at international level) was highly competitive, but before the days of spot-betting and other such activities, which have so sullied the game this year.

Buy this book; read it, and think of long summer days gone by!
