Book Description

The story of James Herriot's formative years at veterinary college, to accompany a major BBC drama series.

Product Description

'We had no antibiotics, few drugs. A lot of time was spent pouring things down cows' throats. The whole thing added up to a lot of laughs. There's more science now, but not so many laughs.'

We all know James Herriot, possibly the most famous vet in the world. But how did a young student named Alf Wight become the man who would charm millions of readers the world over?

Young Herriot tells the fascinating story of James Herriot's formative years at veterinary college. Set in Glasgow in the 1930s - pre-antibiotics, when veterinary practise was, as Herriot wrote, 'more art than science' - the book shines a light on his calling to work with animals (which began when he read an article in Meccano Magazine entitled 'Veterinary Surgery as a Career'), his early friendships and quest for knowledge at Glasgow's Veterinary College and the early development of his legendary compassion for animals.

Accompanying a major BBC drama series, Young Herriot uses previously unpublished diaries and casebooks from Herriot's days as a student to bring to life a fascinating time and place, and represents a thrilling new addition to the James Herriot canon.

I am a massive fan of Alf White (James Herriot) and more recently an even bigger fan of the new series of Mike Pannett's books. So, I thought I would give it a try. I have just read the book over a couple of nights, and found it very enjoyable and easy to read. I loved the setting, and found it very informative. Things seemed more fun back in the 1930s, so am looking forward to the series on the BBC very much. I guess it was also far harder to treat animals back then too, as these were pre-antibiotic times. As is said by young Alf, "more art than science". I did enjoy Pannett's books more, because they were as good as the original Herriot books, but set in modern times. However,Overall "Young Herriot" is a yes, well written and worth the read, and would recommend it to all.

I loved reading the James Herriot books when I was a teenager and watching the long-running tv series starring Christopher Timothy and Carol Drinkwater.

This new biography of Herriot's early life is nicely presented and clearly written. There are also two sections of black and white photographs showing the people and places of his youth.

However, such a large book seems a bit much just to cover his childhood years and inevitably the leisurely pace of the narrative lacks the lightness of touch and humour of Herriot's own writing.

You would have to be a fan to enjoy this book - which I am and enjoyed most of it. I especially enjoyed the part about James and his parents early life. When he was at Glasgow Vetinary College it got bogged down a bit but I am glad that I now have this in my collection of material about James Herriot.
